  2. Overview • Understanding Louisiana Content Standards and Grade Level Expectations • Specific considerations for handwriting • Additional Resources

  3. Grade-Level Expectations (GLEs) • Content-specific statements of what a student should know and be able to do by the end of a given grade or course. • Part of the state content standards that clarify specific grade-level expectations.

  4. ELA (Handwriting)

  5. Handwriting GLEs • Handwriting is included in Louisiana English Language Arts (ELA) Content Standards, Benchmarks and GLEs. • However, few ELA GLEs specifically address handwriting skills. • Why? • Handwriting overlaps with and is practiced through other skills. • For example: Grade 1 students are asked to “Create phonetically spelled written work that can be read by the writer and others.”

  6. Handwriting GLEs • In K-4, align with GLE(s) that address handwriting • In 5 and 6, align with the benchmark that addresses handwriting • Need for committee expertise

  7. Committee Expertise • Attend to developmentally appropriate practice based on additional ELA GLEs at each grade level • For example, asking students to practice letter formation using inventive spelling would be appropriate for kindergarten according to other ELA GLEs; however, asking students to practice letter formation while writing a paragraph in kindergarten would not be appropriate.

  8. Additional Resources • Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum for English Language Arts can provide clarification and demonstrate application of a GLE, if needed.

Kindergarten GLEs: GLE 28 – Demonstrate an understanding of letter placement in text by writing letters and words from left to right and top to bottom on a page (ELA‑3‑E1) GLE 30 – Print letters and words with proper figure grounding on a line and with appropriate spaces between words (ELA‑3‑E1) • Kindergarten Curriculum, Unit 1, Activity 11: “The student will work with the teacher to create an All About Me chart that will include…writings. The students will use developmental/inventive spelling or dictation for the writings on the chart. Students’ writing during this activity will provide a sample of their understanding that print is linear and proceeds from top-to-bottom and left-to-right on the page. Students may be given a tool to use, such as a craft stick, to assist with leaving spaces between words.”

  10. Instructional Materials should… • serve as a resource to teachers and students, • provide adequate and appropriate instruction, and • correlate well with the Louisiana ELA GLEs and benchmarks that address handwriting.
