  1. Properties of Gases

  2. Kinetic-molecular theory describes the behavior of gases in terms of particles in motion. Kinetic-Molecular Theory Gases are made from small particles separated from one another by empty space.

  3. Gas particles are in constant, random motion and collisions between particles are elastic. Kinetic-Molecular Theory The mass and speed of gas particles determine the kinetic energy of a gas sample.

  4. Gases have a very low density. Behavior of Gases Gases can be compressed or expanded.

  5. Diffusion The movement of one material through another.

  6. Effusion Gas escaping a container through a tiny opening.

  7. Gas Behavior Recap Gases effuse through small openings at measureable rates. At the same temperature, gases with smaller masses move faster than heavy gases. Gases diffuse into spaces filled with other gases.

  8. Gas Properties Practice 1) What does KMT assume about the size and positioning of gas particles? particles are large and move slowly particles are small and move quickly particles are large and far apart particles are small and far apart

  9. Gas Properties Practice 2) True or False: According to KMT, gas particles are in constant, random motion. The particles lose energy when they collide with other gas particles.

  10. Gas Properties Practice 3) Larger, slow-moving gases could have the same kinetic energy as smaller, fast-moving gases. The relationship that explains this is: mass/velocity = KE mass * velocity = KE ½ mass * velocity = KE KE = m * c2

  11. Gas Properties Practice 4) Perfume sprayed into a room quickly spreads out until it is evenly distributed in lower concentrations than the original spray. This is based on ________ cause by ___________. effusion, kinetic energy diffusion, random particle motion compression, variable density

  12. Gas Properties Practice 5) Gases escaping a container through a small opening are measured to determine their relative velocities. This process is an example of: effusion of gases diffusion of gases kinetic energy of gases compression of gases

  13. Gas Properties Practice 6) At the same temperature, H2 gas will move ______ Cl2 gas. slower than the same speed faster than
