  5. The Gospel of Luke Introduction 1:5-2:52 Preparation for the Gospel: John and Jesus Contrast: John and Jesus The Birth, Circumcision and Naming of Jesus The Birth, Circumcision and Naming of John The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple Annunciation of the Birth of Jesus Annunciation of the Birth of John Jesus teaching in the Temple Mary’s Visit to Elizabeth 1:5-25 1:26-38 1:39-56 1:57-80 2:1-21 2:24-40 2:41-52 John may be the “like” Jesus; but Jesus is incomparably superior to John

  6. Contrast: Jesus vs. John • Passage begins with John’s birth announced in Temple (1:13); ends with Jesus teaching in Temple (2:49) • John’s parents are aged (1:18); Jesus’ conception is from a virgin (1:34-35) • John is endowed with Spirit from birth (1:15); Jesus is endowed with Spirit from conception (1:35) • Mary defers to Elizabeth and John by journeying to her; Elizabeth defers to Mary by calling her “Mother of my Lord”; John by leaping at sound of Mary’s voice (1:39-45) • John’s birth celebrated by neighbors and relatives (1:58); Jesus’ birth celebrated by angels praising God (2:13-14) • John is great as a prophet of Most High God (1:15, 76); Jesus is great as unique Son of Most High God (1:32-33, 69) • John’s ministry is to prepare people to meet the Lord (1:17); Jesus will be cause of great division (2:34-35) • Jesus receives twice as much material as John • John receives a prophetic response in Temple (1:67-79); Jesus receives two prophetic responses in the Temple: Simeon and Anna • Carefully note how in Luke-Acts this continues: Acts 13:24-25, 18:25; 19:1-4

  7. What is a faithful response in Luke-Acts? • Hearing and doing what the Word (or prophetic word) says! • Understanding is not a prerequisite to faith. • Pondering, wondering, questioning are all valid as long as they do not deter you from the “journey” of faith • Mary becomes the ideal character; godly person; Zechariah proclaims the wrong response; hears but does not “listen.” Thus, he loses the ability to speak to the people or top represent them. • But there is the possibility of “recovery”, for as he acts obediently, immediately his voice returns.

  8. The Gospel of Luke Introduction 1:5-2:52 Climax 2:46-52 Preparation for the Gospel: John and Jesus Jesus’ Temple Teaching  People’s Amazement Parental Ignorance Unique Agents of God: Fore-Runner and Son The Birth, Circumcision and Naming of Jesus The Birth, Circumcision and Naming of John The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple Annunciation of the Birth of Jesus Annunciation of the Birth of John Jesus teaching in the Temple Mary’s Visit to Elizabeth After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them. Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. 1:5-25 1:26-38 1:39-56 1:57-80 2:1-21 2:24-40 2:41-52
