  3. Aim: What does ‘the pound of flesh’ symbolize in the play ? • H. W.: Answer the aim, in two paragraphs . • Do Now: When was the pound of flesh first mentioned?

  5. Activities: Reading and discussion Explain significance of the pound of flesh.

The pound of flesh: • It is significant that Bassanio’s debt is to be paid with Antonio’s flesh, showing how their friendship is so binding that it has made them almost one. • It calls attention to Shylock’s inflexible adherence to the law. • Also, it is as if Shylock were seeking recompense for the loss of his own flesh and blood, Jessica, by collecting it from his enemy.
