  2. Math at Work Sandra Tuccaro is an Inuvialuit nurse who works in a Home Care Department in Yellowknife, NWT. She has a nursing diploma and her job involve many tasks including administering medicine to patients. (Add picture here)

  3. Sandra has to administer 300 mg of a drug that comes in a vial that has 120 mg of the drug dissolved in 2 mL of fluid.

  4. What is a ratio? • Over the next few lessons, you will learn to apply your know of ratios in new ways. A ratio is a comparison between two numbers with the same units. A ratio between 1 mL and 5 mL could be written as: 1 : 5 or 1 5 Most often we use the fractional form.

  5. A proportion is a fractional statement of equality between two ratios. For example if you need 3 parts of blue paint to every one part of green paint then if you have 12 parts of blue part we are going to need ...

  6. Table Question • You have invited five friends over to your house and decided to serve them homemade cookies. You found a great recipe that makes 20 large cookies. You only need 12, two for each person. How could you change the recipe to make only 12 cookies and have them taste exactly the same.

  7. Ex1. Engines that require that you mix oil with fuel to provide lubrication are called 2-stroke engines. A faller at a logging camp needs to refill a chainsaw’s fuel can. The ratio of gasoline to oil that is needed is 40 parts of gasoline to 1 part of oil. The chainsaw’s fuel can holds 8 litres of gasoline. How much oil should be added to the gasoline to obtain the correct ratio?

  8. Ex 2. A builder has found that he can arrange work cubicles of his work employees best if the ratio between the length and the width of the room is 3:2. If a room is 6 m long, how wide should the room be?
