LIPD Case - studies • MARY PENN, Lecturer in Art and Design, Coleg Sir GârVisit to Cyprus Images of ‘The Wall’ - use of sculpture in the environment “In visiting the Lempa site of the Cyprus College of Art I had the opportunity to view and record ‘The Wall’, a perimeter boundary dividing the Art Studios from road. ‘The Wall’ was originated by the founder of the college and has been worked on by him since then, with support from the staff team and students…it has now been declared a National Monument by the Cypriot government in recognition of its artistic merit and relevance to the countries artistic heritage. This has inspired me to present this concept to the both the students and Faculty / College Management as an inspiration for our own exterior environment.”

LIPD Case - studies MARY PENN, Lecturer in Art and Design, Coleg Sir GârVisit to Cyprus Studios at Limassol I want to “Explore the possibility of two site BA Courses based at Carmarthen and Cyprus, with students studying at both Centres, and receiving a University of Glamorgan degree based on Units completed at either / both sites. This would support recruitment from outside Wales, and also the development of international links for local students who would be able to broaden their experience / skill base through this scheme.”

I have had the opportunity to give a presentation to my colleagues and all colleagues were interested in my findings and the LIPD scheme.”

LIPD Case - studies • ANNA ROBERTS, ESOL Lecturer, Coleg MenaiVisit to Sydney, Australia TAFE International Education Centre Anna “gave a presentation to the whole team highlighting how the experience had not only given her new ideas and plans for innovation in our centre but also how it had enabled her to view and evaluate our own practice in a new light. The materials and information on different methodologies have stimulated debate and propelled staff to work anew on our own materials and introduce new techniques such as the use of a ‘Learner Journal’ to extend writing skills.Anna has prepared an action plan which is going to be implemented in stages which will have a direct impact on learner experience within the department. The whole team have been stimulated and motivated to carry Anna’s experiences forward.” from Anna’s line manager

LIPD Case - studies • HILARY BEYNON, Lecturer in Modern Languages, Coleg GwentVisit to Georgia, USA Drama class at South Cobb School, Georgia “The drama staff there are to look into the possibility of bringing a small production to Crosskeys. They have written and produced short plays on the theme of the Holocaust which they could perform, here to audiences on campus of history, RE, and drama students as well as history classes in our feeder schools and a venue in the local community.” Our college is “currently piloting the Welsh Baccalaureate and we urgently need partner institutions in the USA and in Europe in order to set up work experience programmes and curriculum links.” from the line manager

LIPD Case - studies • HILARY BEYNON, Lecturer in Modern Languages, Coleg GwentVisit to Georgia, USA Spanish sketches “I intend to ensure that I have all e mail addresses for my students in September and will expand my at present ad hoc use of this to a more formalised way of marking homework exercises and assignments and even transferring sound recordings.” I recommend LIPD participants “stay with a colleague. Had I stayed in a hotel the nature of the experience would have been totally different. I learned so much from them and the hospitality was wonderful.” “Drama – I caught the end of a sketch and the ensuing animated discussion of low self esteem of one of the characters – something similar would make good activities for tutorial/WBQ/PSE.”

LIPD Case - studies • GORDON FROWEN, Lecturer in Construction and VICTORIA ENGLISH Lecturer in Sociology, Coleg GwentVisit to Santa Fe Community College, Florida, USA Motor Vehicle Classroom and use of manufacturer’s software "Although the mirrored problems of skill shortages and employers' reluctance to employ apprentices were frustratingly evident, the types of delivery methods, links with industry and the use of ILT to support the curriculum delivery were refreshingly positive.” My LIPD visit “has encouraged me to be more active in the enrolment, retention and achievements of my students.” Both colleges “will benefit greatly from the initiative. It goes without saying that we would be very interested in a reciprocal arrangement from one staff of Santa Fe Community College in the future." from the college principal. I am a guest lecturer on three of their modules. And in the coming academic year 2005-6 I plan to work with Dr Naima Prince on a project involving both Santa Fe and Coleg Gwent students.” While the participant “benefited a great deal from her visit, she also made very significant contributions to our campus… The sociology faculty are honored that she has agreed to serve as a guest lecturer in our online classes.” from Naima Prince at Santa Fe.

LIPD Case - studies • GORDON FROWEN, Lecturer in Construction and VICTORIA ENGLISH Lecturer in Sociology, Coleg GwentVisit to Santa Fe Community College, Florida, USA • College wide Presentation on teaching and learning in the UK • “The Hybrid Courses offered an innovative and very flexible student centred form of delivery. Using a blended on-line and traditional teaching format, the students were offered the best of both technology and face to face contact with tutors. Staff commented on the popularity of these courses which had a higher retention and attainment rate than the on-line courses.” • “Since our visit Dr Edward Bonahue Chair of International Education SFCC has visited our campus and met with our Principal Howard Burton. The process of forming a more formal link is currently being negotiated.”

Claus the organic shepherd grazing sheep on derelict industrial ground “BbS Wittenberg is an institution that has many partners in the rest of Europe, but not in Wales and they are keen to maintain links to enable reciprocal visits and to send students on study programmes. Details of the scholarship will be placed in my Professional Development Review (PDR) which is used in Moderation / Verification inspections: this will help to show that the college management is investing in staff so that they can provide quality learning programmes.”
