  4. Adoption • Adoption is another choice that can be made where the mother gives the baby and relinquishes responsibility to an adopting family. • Adoption Agency • Independent Adoption • Intercountry Adoption

  5. Safe Surrender Law • Jan. 1 2001 • A person with lawful custody can surrender a baby confidentially, and without fear of prosecution within 72 hours of birth. • In Fairfield – ANY Fire Station or Hospital • A bracelet is placed on the baby for identification and on the parent. • Parent has 14 days from surrender to reclaim baby

  6. Safe Surrender Law • In the first 10 years of this program • 407 newborns were surrendered using the program • 151 other newborns were found after illegal abandonment. • www.babysafe.ca.gov

Abortion • In California abortions are a legal alternative to pregnancy • There are no parental consent laws in California so minors can choose this option without parental notification. • A female of child-bearing age in California at this time has a statutory, and a constitutional right, to an abortion. She may at a certain point have to indicate a threat to her life or health otherwise.
