  1. BIBLICAL PASTORAL FORMATION VERBUM DEI FAMILY-MANILA

  2. 1 Timothy2 TimothyTitus

  3. Pastoral letters • They were written to shepherds or pastors of Christian communities • They deal with church life and theology (i.e. pastoral theology)

  4. Who were Timothy and Titus?

  5. Timothy • One of Paul’s closest companions. According to Acts 16, 1-3 Timothy, who was born of mixed Jewish and pagan parentage, had at sometime become a Christian and began to follow Paul after meeting him at Lystra (modern day Turkey). • Timothy served as Paul’s representative on missions to Thessalonica, Corinth and probably also Philippi. He was in close contact with Paul during the latter’s imprisonment at Ephesus and was also with him at Corinth when Romans was written. • He is listed as the co-author of 4 of Paul’s genuine letters – 2 Cor, Phil, 1 Thess, Phlm.

  6. Titus • Titus, a Gentile convert, came with Paul to the Jerusalem conference and later accompanied Paul on a delicate mission to Corinth to patch up relations between Paul and that community. • Later Titus then served there as Paul’s delegate for the gathering of the Jerusalem collection.

  7. Order of letters? • In your bible? • Look at 2 Tim 4,6-8 • How long is the greeting of Titus? • 65 words (only Rom and Gal have longer) • Order? • Titus, 1 Tim, 2 Tim

  8. Who wrote them? • Not Paul • A secretary or disciple • Not forgeries! • Timothy?

  9. Authorship • Quite similar to one another in vocabulary, grammatical usage and style they diverge sharply in all these respects from the clearly genuine letters of Paul • In pastorals – piety, good conscience, epiphany • Paul – cross, freedom, covenant • Paul likes passionate and explosive style, throwing in thoughts and unfinished sentences, whereas Pastorals formal and subdued. • He gives long term rules to colleagues he will see again shortly.

  10. Authorship • Less value because not written by Paul? • No! Still part of the Canon • Many writings in New Testament not by Paul but still valuable • “Claimed authorship of a famous person was not uncommon in the ancient world. Paul’s disciples schooled in his teaching and thought processes would have no scruple or think it dishonest to write about important matters in his name” M.J. Taylor S.J.

  11. Pastoral letters • Church was more highly developed than earlier Pauline letters • Probably written 100 AD (NJBC) • Less heightened expectation of eschaton • Author of Pastorals wanted to urge church leaders to value and maintain ecclesial and societal structure and order.

  13. 1 TIMOTHY Ch. 1 • Instruct against false teachings(1 Tim 1:3-11) The teachers of the Law who are concerned only myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the plan of God that is to be received by faith. The aim of this instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. Some people have deviated from these and turned to meaningless talk.

  14. 1 TIMOTHY Ch. 2 Pray for all those in authority (1 Tim 2, 1-2) Advice regarding womenThey should adorn themselves with proper conduct, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hairstyles and gold ornaments, or pearls, or expensive clothes, (1 Tim 2:9)

  15. 1 TIMOTHY Ch. 3 Requirements of Bishops (1 Tim 3,2-7)Decent, able to teach, married only once, not a drunkard, not a lover of money Deaconsthey should be tested first; then, if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. (1 Tim 3:10) Women(deacons)Similarly, should be dignified, not slanderers, but temperate and faithful in everything.(1 Tim 3:11)

  16. 1 TIMOTHY Ch. 4 What Timothy must practice and teach Train yourself for devotion, 8 for, while physical training is of limited value, devotion is valuable in every respect, since it holds a promise of life both for the present and for the future. 9 This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance. 10 For this we toil and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the savior of all, especially of those who believe. 11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set an example for those who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.

  17. 1 TIMOTHY Ch. 4 13 Until I arrive, attend to the reading, exhortation, and teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was conferred on you through the prophetic word with the imposition of hands of the presbyterate. 15 Be diligent in these matters, be absorbed in them, so that your progress may be evident to everyone. 16 Attend to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in both tasks, for by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.(1 Tim 4:7-16)

  18. 1 TIMOTHY Ch. 5 Relationships in the communityDo not rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as a father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters with complete purity (1 Tim 5:1-2) Widows Presbyters17Presbyters who preside well deserve double honor, especially those who toil in preaching and teaching…19Do not accept an accusation against a presbyter unless it is supported by two or three witnesses. (1Tim 5:17,19) Health advice23Stop drinking only water, but have a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. (1 Tim 5:23)

  19. 1 TIMOTHY Ch. 6 Slavery Greed -For the love of money is the root of all evils (1 Tim 6:10) Exhortation But you, man of God, avoid all this. Instead, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. 12 Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses...O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. (1 Tim 6:11-12.20)

  20. 2 TIMOTHY Ch. 1 Take care of what you have receivedI remind you to stir into flame the gift of God (2 Tim 1:6) For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. 8So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord,(2 Tim 1:7-8) Apostolic labours I was appointed preacher and apostle and teacher. 12 On this account I am suffering these things; but I am not ashamed, for I know him in whom I have believed and am confident that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day.(2 Tim 1:11-12) Guard this rich trust with the help of the holy Spirit that dwells within us.(2 Tim 1:14)

  21. 2 TIMOTHY Ch. 2

  22. 2 TIMOTHY Ch. 3 The last daysPeople will be self-centered and lovers of money (2 Tim 3:2) But you, remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it (2 Tim 3:14)

  23. 2 TIMOTHY Ch. 4 • Obligation to preach the WordI charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: 2 proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. 3 For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers 4 and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry. (2 Tim 4:1-5) • Final testimony6 For I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. (2 Tim 4:6-7)
