  2. Library Labs • Don't forget to hand in a record that shows you have attended. • Your lowest quiz score will be dropped after your second lab.

  3. Quiz Wednesday • Based on your QA readings. • You are allowed to use your book, but the quiz is precisely limited to 15 minutes.

  4. Working Bibliography • Requirements: • Five to seven possible sources • You are not stuck with these if you find better ones. • You MUST do the citation in your chosen style. • Don't number them. • Title it Works Cited or References

  6. Timed Essay for Friday • GWAR format • Quote will be from Wes Moore • We'll go over timed essays more on Wednesday.

  7. Sample Question • The exam has two parts: A and B. Make sure you complete both parts. • We all make mistakes in our lives. As Lewis Thomas explains, • “Mistakes are at the very base of human thought, embedded there, feeding the structure like root nodules. If we were not provided with the knack of being wrong, we would never get anything useful done. We think our way along by choosing between right and wrong alternatives, and the wrong choices have to be made as frequently as the right ones. We get along in life this way.   10. Documented Essay—Synthesis • Due Week 6 • Synthesis: uses 3 or more summaries of sources drawing together particular traits that run throughout the sources. • Thesis driven • Needs MLA/APA citations and formats

  11. Synthesis • It is not organized by source; it is organized by ideas or themes. • It is more of an informative paper than an argumentative since you are presenting the ideas rather than using them to support your thesis. • The thesis is created by the information that you have summarized from the sources.

  12. Synthesis • The topic sentences for the synthesis must clearly tie to the thesis. • It is advisable to make a list of points, outlines and/or a summary for each source.

  13. Intro for Synthesis     1.    Contains a one-sentence statement that sums up the focus of your synthesis. [Thesis]    2.   Introduces the texts to be synthesized (TAG): 3. follows APA or MLA 4. Needs to provide some information about the topic that the texts represent.

  14. Body Paragraphs This needs to be organized by themes and/or points  Your organization will be the patterns you see in the material you are synthesizing.  • Begins with a topic sentence. • Each paragraph includes information from more than one source which each change of source clearly delineated. • Shows the similarities or differences between the different sources in ways that make the paper as informative as possible;  Represents the texts fairly—give each source equal time. • You are summarizing so you don't change what the source means and don't add your own opinion.

  15. Conclusion for synthesis • Does not start "in conclusion" or the like. • Review the themes you found and how they connect to the topic. • Possible additions: • why further research may be needed. • Offer your own interpretation—this is the onlyplace your opinion can enter the paper.
