  6. Oral health Summary • 70% children no obvious disease • 50,000 children (additional) no obvious disease • Adult oral health –no teeth • 1972 44% - Scotland • 1993 - 29% - Grampian • 2009 - 9% - Grampian • Since 1974 125,000 extra adults have teeth about 70% now have 20+ teeth

  14. Dental Team numbers • Dentists – • 2004/5 230 • 2007/8 280 • 2011/12 350 • 115 additional since 2005 • ( 50% increase based on 2004/5 data ) • Dental nurses x 1.6 Circa 575 in Grampian • Main supplier NHS Education Scotland

  15. Other team members • Therapists • Inverness Dundee Glasgow Edinburgh all now graduating therapist numbers increasing slowly. • Dental technicians • Only one course – Edinburgh little increase • Clinical technicians/Orthodontic therapists minimal change/1 or 2 in Grampian

Workforce Development • Largest change to date – Dental Nurses • Childsmile and Oral Health Promotion • Decontamination • Health and Safety / practice management • Others of note orthodontic therapists • Most likely to produce further radical change • Dental therapists – eg general + periodontology • Dental nurses – eg prevention (smoking ) + behaviour management
