  1. Bentham’s Welfare Hedonism • Qualitative Similarity: All pleasures are qualitatively identical. Considered in themselves as mental states, they differ only in: • Intensity: how intense a pleasure (or a pain) is • Duration: how long a pleasure (or a pain) lasts • Thus, theoretically, we can calculate the quantity of pleasure (or pain) by multiplying its intensity times its duration.
