  2. Workshop Aims • Introduce concept of such a Network • Discuss what is possible and aims of network • Get input from organisations running / experienced in establishing and running Networks • Discuss who it would include, what it would address and how it would be run • Outline the way forward

  3. Issues to be considered • Practicality and need for such a Network – is it do-able? • What will it aim to achieve? • Duplication? Should it be a subsidiary of another structure? • Who should participate? Membership? • Should it target SADC countries first? Or include any cities in Africa wishing to participate? Barriers and opportunities: distance, communications across Africa, language issues… • Funding? Secretariat?

Where does this come from? • SEED regional network - boundaries / WSSD • SEA - African Energy Directory = urban NGOs, networks and organisations and local authorities = 189 NGOs/ Networks (50 SAfrican) and multitudes of urban councils • CES Conference – invitations sent out • Secretariat proposal

City Networks (International) • UNEP • ICLEI • UNCHS (HABITAT) Settlement Infrastructure and Environment Programme • Energie Cite´s • MELISSA Program • Municipal Development Partnership, • The Cities Alliance • Metropolis • World Associations of Cities and Local Authorities, • World Federation of United Cities • The Commonwealth Local Government Forum

Objectives of the Network? • Build communication and ties between African cities • Provide a conduit for information sharing on city energy programmes, planning and projects • Promote access for African cities to other urban energy organisations; share information / get support from these organisations • Share experiences in developing local energy strategies and projects • Build capacity to develop sustainable energy plans and implement energy projects • Build the commitment of African cities to carbon emission mitigation and assist in promoting adherence to the Kyoto Protocol and the UNFCCC

  7. Participants? • Local government councils in Africa interested in working on energy, sustainable development, environmental issues. • Representatives of organisations working with cities on energy (or related) issues – in Africa and globally.
