Emissivity • Surface Emissivity is the ability of a surface to emit electromagnetic radiation • For Float Glass, Emissivity = 0.9 • For Aluminium, Emissivity =0.3 • This means that if an IGU is constructed using Chromatics, with the foil on Surface 2 or 3, that surface will be emitting into the airspace much more efficiently than a glass surface

  4. How Big is the Effect? Insulation Values • 6mm Clear Float U = 5.7 W/m²K • 6mm Chromatics U = 4.1 W/m²K • Conventional Argon filled IGU U = 1.7 – 1.4W/m²K • IGU with Chromatics foil to surfaces 2 & 3 U = 1.7W/m²K • As above, but Argon Filled U= 1.4W/m²K

  5. Advantages • The Chromatics unit can have insulation values similar to a gas filled unit • There is no chance of deterioration over time due to gas leakage or unit failure • If the units are constructed with gas filling, then the performance is even higher

  6. BS EN 1279 • In order to exploit the advantages of this product, each manufacturing unit will need to demonstrate compliance with BS EN 1279 to ensure durability and allow CE marking • Indicative testing is currently being carried out by a third party for surface 2 (or 3) • Final results expected December 2010, but present indications are very good
