  1. Letter of Appeal How to write letters of Appeal?

  2. Letter of Appeal • A written letter of appeal is a document that is appropriate when there is some type of objection to a decision that has been rendered. In a legal setting, a letter of appeal may be drafted by an attorney as an appeal for lawmakers to reverse a decision that currently defines some aspect of local law. In a business setting, a letter of appeal may be issued from a supplier to a vendor in hopes of restoring a lost working relationship or as a means for an employee to petition an employer to reverse some recent change in procedure. At its core, a letter of appeal is simply an attempt to have an authority reconsider some action or decision that has taken place.

  3. Keys in writing Letter of Appeal • Be polite • Be concise • Only write on the topic • Emphasize the fact that you are not against the country • Say who you are • Individual Letters • Do you have a special interest? • Present the case concisely • Write in English • Send a copy • Repeat the effort

With very little change from one environment to another, this basic format works just as well for appealing to local officials to reverse a recent decision to convert a one way street into a two way street as it does for an employee to ask an employer to reconsider a recent change to a vacation policy. In all instances, the letter of appeal should be typewritten rather than handwritten and should be structured in standard business letter form.

  10. Example #1 Wu AiyingBuzhangSifabu 10 ChaoyangmenNandadjie Chaoyangqu, Beijingshi 100020 People’s Republic of China October 31, 2008 Dear Minister, I’m a 15 year old boy living in Holland and am against the fact that your country still uses the death penalty for a human that has done a crime and cannot use for example a lawyer and this should be stopped. As you know all countries in the world have accepted the UDHR (Universal Declaration of Human Rights), and some of my sources tell me that the People’s Republic of China still uses the Death Penalty and as stated in article 5 it says: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” The death penalty is inhuman and one action that is irreversible. If you later find out that the human was not guilty you can’t turn him back alive. If he dies there will be no clear evidence of the crime. Also if he didn’t had any effective remedy (Article 8) you can’t judge him the death penalty.

  11. Example #1 In article 9 it says: “No one should be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.” This means that you can’t put someone in jail for years or execute him for no good reason. If you haven’t got any evidence you are not allowed to do this. Also stated in article 11, the one that is offended by the law should be able to have a lawyer for his own defense. If not he can’t be declared guilty. The death penalty shouldn’t be used either for executing people. If you do that you can’t get any more evidence as stated above but the one that is executed should have a stay in prison. If in a case somebody has done something “inhuman” he should be put in jail for whole his life. In that time he can still live but with less accessibility then before, also if he is declared not guilty afterwards you can still take him out of prison. So what I’m trying to say is that the death penalty should be abolished and that nobody should be executed, if the case is so bad that the human is “insane” and threatens the people you should put him in a special jail without hurting him. If he attacks someone you should be able to defend. But the execution of people should be stopped and all people should be able to have an effective remedy. Sincerely yours, Arjun

  12. Example #2 Ms. Jane GatekeeperDirector of AdmissionsIvy Tower CollegeCollegetown, USA Dear Ms. Gatekeeper, Although I was not surprised when I received a rejection letter from Ivy Tower College, I was extremely disappointed. I knew when I applied that my SAT scores from the November exam were below average for Ivy Tower. I also knew at the time of the SAT exam (because of illness) that my scores did not represent my true ability. However, since I applied to Ivy Tower back in January, I have retaken the SAT and improved my scores measurably. My math score went from a 570 to a 660, and my reading score went up a full 120 points. I have instructed the College Board to send these new scores to you.

  13. Example #2 I know Ivy Tower discourages appeals, but I hope you will accept these new scores and reconsider my application. I have also had the best quarter yet at my high school, and I have enclosed my most recent grade report for your consideration. Again, I fully understand and respect your decision to deny me admission, but I do hope you will reopen my file to consider this new information. I was tremendously impressed by Ivy Tower when I visited last fall, and it remains the school I would most like to attend. Sincerely, Joe Student
