  2. Make sure to have your INDEPENDENT READING BOOK in the room with you. • Find your new seat and have out… • INDEPENDENT READING BOOK • Notebook • Pen/ pencil Happy Monday! You need your book. If you forget it, you will need to use a pass to retrieve it from your locker.

  3. Every Monday, you will need your independent reading book in order to complete our ROOTS and READING study. • Every Monday class period will proceed in the following manner: Roots and Reading 1. When you arrive, the weekly roots/affixes will be posted on the board. 2. In the notes section of the notebook, students will create a list of any word they know which uses that word part.

Biennial • Bicycle • Biology • Biped • Bifocals • Binary • Uni- • Tri- • Unitard • Unicycle • Univision • United • Unicorn • Unicycle • Unite • Tricycle • Triennial • Tricorn • Triple Bi- Some lists will be longer than others… Sometimes your list will be blank… Just know, in this case, trying is what counts!

  5. 1. When you arrive, the weekly roots/affixes will be posted on the board. 2. In the notes section of the notebook, students will create a list of any word they know which uses that word part. 3. After creating a personal list and considering the word parts, students will work in their assigned small groups to infer the root/affix meaning based on prior knowledge. 4. Students will share their assumptions and explanations with the class. Rootsand Reading 5. Students will create a table in the VOCABULARY section of their notebook and record each word part, it’s meaning, origin, and sample words. 6. Students will seek necessary clarification for any misunderstandings.

  6. In your notebook, record the word parts for this week: • viv/ vit • chron • hydro • logy/ ology • init • min Let’s try it… list all the words you can think of which contain these word parts.

  7. Read through each list and make an INFERENCE about what each root might mean. “I think ______ means _______ because…” In your small group…

  8. Create the following chart- • Be sure you give yourself room to record information. 7 In your VOCABULARY section- 4

Word parts help us uncover the meaning of words which are new to us, so… As you read… look for words which are new to you. • Your SSR goal: Record 3 words which… Using our knowledge… • Are new to you and you find interesting • Contain any studied word parts • You have seen/ learned before and would like to incorporate into your vocabulary

  11. Use the context and/ or word parts to INFER the meaning of your listed words. • Double-check the word’s meaning with the dictionary. • If you can’t understand the definition, ask for teacher or peer help. • Share at least ONE word each six weeks! Learn your words!

  12. Summer Reading Assignment- due 9/16 (one week) • After school help on Wednesday! • Progress Check #2- due Th/ Fr (of THIS week) • Back to School Night- TOMORROW • Progress Reports- Friday • You are all GREAT! Announcements!
