  3. Objectives • Know where to start on the main Factfinder screen without panicking • Know how to navigate through a program without remembering the details • Recognize the glitches so you can start over • Familiarize yourself with upcoming alternatives to Factfinder

Questions You Can Answer Today • Are percentage of families headed by single mothers going up or down in Detroit? • Are black males and females imprisoned disproportionately to population? • How many centenarians live in Ann Arbor? • Which Michigan county has seen the highest growth in the Asian Indian population? • Which zip code has the highest number of same sex couples?

Race Comparability with 1990 Census • 2000 Asian and 2000 Hawaiian and Pacific Islander must be compressed with 1990 Asian and Pacific Islander • 2000 multiple races means 2-3% of data is not comparable with 1990 • Possibility that “Other” in 1990 were Hispanic and show up as another race in 2000 because of question location

  25. American Factfinder Advantages http://factfinder.census.gov/ Accessible from home at all hours (we hope!) • Tract/block maps for entire country • Simple thematic maps • All data sets • Can mix types of geography (e.g. U.S., state, county and six tracts)

American Factfinder Disadvantages http://factfinder.census.gov/ • Limited to 500 geographies (cannot get all tracts in large counties) • Tables can be too wide to print (experimental transposition available) • Cannot choose individual variables in a table (e.g. just males rather than individual counts of both males and females) • Tables cannot be combined on screen (must use spreadsheet)

  38. Reference Maps • 2000 maps identify every state, county, place, zip code, metropolitan area, census tract, block group and block in the country • 1990 maps identify all areas except individual blocks

  39. REFERENCE MAPS • Internet Explorer 5.0 works best if you want to click and zoom • Choose CHANGE SELECTIONS/Geography for three better options

  40. LIST Geography • When using the LIST method, choose the geographic area above the one you know • For an unknowntract number in Ann Arbor, choose PLACE

  43. Navigating the Map • Level 5 maps provide an overview of the tracts • Not all features show in this view • Use arrows to move map or click to zoom in

  44. Block Group Maps • Block groups show up best at Level 3 • Zoom to Level 2 for street names and block numbers • Tract and block group colors are so similar that you may want to change the legend to view the tract boundaries
