  4. What are some types of check fraud? • Forgery • Counterfeiting and alteration • Paperhanging: purposely writing checks on closed account • Check kiting: opening two or more accounts; using float time of available funds

What are some check security features? • Watermarks • Copy void pantograph: designs in background of checks when photocopied the pattern changes and the word “Void” appears • Chemical voids • 3-D reflective holostripe: metallic strip with holograms • Security inks • Invisible and visible fibers

  6. What are some positive protective measures you could take? • Don’t put bills in residential mailbox • Deliver checks to your bank or have bank deliver with a parcel service • Shred or burn canceled checks; don’t put in the trash! • Check bank statements immediately; failure to report fraud within 30 days = forfeiting reimbursement • Print return address on envelop; do not provide a signature for someone to copy • Don’t discard credit card bills or records with household trash

  7. Used as Evidence 1. Class characteristic--the type of ink may have similar characteristics at the primary and/or secondary crime scene, on the suspect or on the victim. Handwriting may be used to include or exclude a suspect. 2. Individual characteristic--With document analysis, it is difficult to identify to an individual characteristic except with typewriter or printer specific marks.
