Behavior Objectives • Define the basics of Electrical Systems • Explain the basic principles of Electricity. • Describe the different materials used in Home Electrical Systems.
Wiring • Electrical wiring is one of the three installations including plumbing, hearing ,and air conditioning. • Electrical wiring consists of wires, boxes, and devices that control the distribution and use of electricity. (wires, boxes, switches)
Wiring • Electrical wiring powers lights, heating units, and appliances such as refrigerators, ovens and washing machines.
Wiring Safety • Personal contact could cause serious injury or even death. • An electrical short may cause a fire.
Wiring This is why installation requires professional installation.
Equipment and Materials • Conductors – These are the wires that carry current from the source. • Boxes and Covers – Covers, conceal and protect devices, such as switches and receptacles, placed in boxes in boxes. • Switches – Switches control the current to lights and appliances
Equipment and Materials • Fuses and Circuit Breakers – Protect conductors from overloads, shutting off power to the circuit in case of a fault in the circuit or a too-heavy current draw that would heat up the wire and cause it to fail. • Receptacles (outlets) – Allows convenient connection of appliances and lights to a circuit. • Conduit– Pipes or enclosed channels through which conductors are run • Connectors – Secure connections between two or more conductors and conduit.
Electricity • Electricity – is the flow of electrons in a conductor. (measured in amps) • Electrical Current – the force applied in order to achieve the flow of electrons.
Electricity • Direct Current – Current flows in one continuous direction. (ex. Battery) • Alternating Current – The process of rapidly changing the direction of voltage. (ex. Home circuits)
Services • Substation – a series of transformers that step down voltage before it is delivered to a large number of customers. • Step-Down Transformer – Each building has a step-down transformer to further step down the voltage.
Electrical Circuits • Electrical Circuit – a complete path for current to flow. • Source – provides the electric energy to the circuit. • Conductor – the path for the electric energy. • Load – Utilizes the current to perform a useful purpose • Control Device – A device used to perform a certain task.
Wires Wires – Power (Red or Black) Neutral (white) Bare (ground)
