  2. The East India Company • Obtained trading rights on the edge of the Mughal empire • When the Mughal empire crumbled the British were able to take over India • The East India Company’s goal was to make money

The Sepoy Rebellion • British tried to convert Indians to Christianity • Required sepoys (Indian troops) to serve in their military • Sepoys went against the British officers; marched to Delhi and hailed the last Mughal ruler as their leader • 1858: parliament ended East India Company's rule over India and put India directly under the British crown

  4. The Sepoy Rebellion • The war started Because the British were trying to change the Indian soldiers religion • This was considered the first war for independence

Britain and India • Britain saw India as a market • British built railroadsand roads, improved transportation and sold British and Indian goods • Britain persuaded Indian farmers to grow cash crops • British rule brought peace to India and a new legal system • In the early 1900’s Indians demanded independence from Britain
