  1. Hadronic EDMs in SUSY GUTs Mitsuru Kakizaki (ICRR, Univ. of Tokyo) Feb. 15, 2005 @ Sendai • Refs.: • J. Hisano, M. K., M. Nagai and Y. Shimizu, ’’Hadronic EDMs in SUSY SU(5) GUTs with right-handed neutrinos,’’ PLB 604, 216 (2004) [hep-ph/0407169] • J. Hisano, M. K. and M. Nagai, “Hadronic EDM Constraints on Orbifold GUTs,”in preparation • We investigate effects and constraints of hadronic EDMs on SUSY GUT models Mitsuru Kakizaki

  2. 1. Motivation • SUSY SM with soft breaking terms: • Severe constraints on parameters • Detectable FCNC and CP violation • GUTs: • Unification of quark and lepton flavor • SUSY GUTs: Well motivated by gauge coupling unification • Unification of mass matrices of squarks and sleptons By investigating phenomena in hadron sectorwe can make predictions in lepton sector, and vice versa • SUSY GUTs are probed with K, B physics, LFV decays and EDMs Mitsuru Kakizaki

  3. SUSY models can be distinguished by hadronic EDM searches • Investigation of effects and constraints of hadronic EDMs on SUSY GUT models • SU(5) SUSY GUT with right-handed neutrino(with mSUGRA boundary condition) • Five-dimensional orbifold GUT (Hall and Nomura model) • Recently Hisano and Shimizu pointed out that hadronic EDM experiments severely constrain CP violating squark generation mixing in SUSY models CP structure for B meson is affected [Hisano,Shimizu(2003,2004)] Purpose of this talk: Mitsuru Kakizaki

  4. Contents • Motivation • Constraints from hadronic EDMs • Hadronic EDMs in SUSY SU(5) GUTs with right-handed neutrinos • Hadronic EDM constraints on orbifold GUTs • Summary New New Mitsuru Kakizaki

  5. 2. Constraints from hadronic EDMs • CEDM of quark : CP and T violation • CP violating off-diagonal elements in squark mass matrices induce CEDMs: CDEMs are enhanced by heavier quark masses Stringent constraints on products of LL and RR mixings: Mitsuru Kakizaki

  6. Constraints on squark flavor mixing [Hisano,Shimizu(2003,2004)] • Current upper bounds from neutron and Hg EDM experiments: Constraints on CEDMs of quarks from neutron (Hg): Constraints on squark flavor mixings from neutron (Hg): • We assume no cancellation among various contributions Mitsuru Kakizaki

  7. 3. Hadronic EDMs in SUSY SU(5) GUTswith right-handed neutrinos

  8. High energy SUSY breaking scenarios • Existanse of large top Yukawa coupling and CKM matrix Sdown LL mixings inevitably arise due to RG effects: EDM experiments constrain sdown RR mixings practically: c.f. Severe constraints on CP violating 1-3 and 2-3 mixings in sdown RR sector Mitsuru Kakizaki

  9. SUSY SU(5) GUTswith right-handed neutrinos • SU(5): GUT CP phases SU(5) Large neutrino Yukawa couplings induce sizable generation mixings in right-handed sdown sector, which are related to left-handed slepton mass matrix: [Moroi(2000)] Mitsuru Kakizaki

  10. EDM vs LFV • Hadronic EDM experiments severely constrain • SU(5) GUT relation: [Hisano,Shimizu(2003); Ciuchini,Masiero,Silvestrini,Vempati,Vives(2003)] When CP violating phases are order of one, upper limit of branching ratios of LFV tau decay are predicted: • c.f. Current upper bound: Mitsuru Kakizaki

  11. New CEDM in SUSY SU(5) GUT with right-handed neutrinos Deutron EDM (Future) Deutron EDM (Future) Right-handed tau neutrino mass • Maximal CP phase • Null result of neutron EDM experiments already constrains mass of right-handed tau neutrino: • Future EDM experiment is sensitive to small region Mitsuru Kakizaki

  12. 4. Hadronic EDM constraints on orbifold GUTs

  13. Gauge, Higgs SU(5) SU(3)XSU(2)XU(1) SU(5) 5-dim orbifold GUT (Hall-Nomura model) [Hall,Nomura, PRD66,075004(2002)] Spacetime: • Realization of light Higgs doublets and heavy Higgs triplets • Explanation of observed values of gauge coupling constants • Suppression proton decay via dimension 4, 5 and 6 operators • Matter location controls flavor structure of (s)fermions:Fermion mass hierarchy via volume suppression Soft SUSY terms only for bulk fields FCNC suppression Mitsuru Kakizaki

  14. Flavor structure in orbifold GUT • in SUSY SM arise from different bulk multiplets: in SM are zero modes of in SM are zero modes of • Yukawa couplings leading to up-type quark masses: SU(5) GUT in 4-dimensional viewpoint is not manifestand thus is not symmetric Mitsuru Kakizaki

  15. New Up quark CEDM induced by squark mixing in orbifold GUT • Bulk fields obtain SUSY breaking masses and couplings: In basis of diagonal up quark mass matrix (superCKM basis) In genericUp CEDM is enhanced by large top quark mass and dangerous • c.f. GUTs with mSUGRA boundary condition: Up CEDM is generated by RG effect of bottom Yukawa coupling Mitsuru Kakizaki

  16. New Up quark CEDM in orbifold GUT Hg EDM • Maximal CP phase Deutron EDM (Future) • Marginal up CEDM is induced by misalignment between CP violating LL and RR up-type squark mixing and by large top quark mass • c.f. GUTs with mSUGRA boundary condition: Mitsuru Kakizaki

  17. 5. Summary • Although EDMs are flavor conserving moments, null results of EDMs also constrain flavor violating parameters • We can probe SUSY GUT models with hadronic EDM experiments • SU(5) SUSY GUTs with right-handed neutrinos: • Five-dimensional orbifold GUT (a la Hall -- Nomura): Marginal CEDM of up quark is induced • More generic conclusion: we can probe physics of SUSY GUTs by investigating various phenomena involving quark and lepton flavor violation Mitsuru Kakizaki

  18. Backup slides Mitsuru Kakizaki

  19. Up CEDM vs in orbifold GUT • Up CEDM constraint is as strong as that of Mitsuru Kakizaki

  20. Supersymmetric standard modeland SUSY flavor problem Fermion boson • Supersymmetry (SUSY): e.g. Quark Squark Hierarchy problem is solved Gaugino Gauge boson • Superparticles are not discovered SUSY must be broken (Soft) SUSY breaking terms are necessary e.g. Soft sfermion mass terms: Generation • Arbitrary sfermion masses and mixings would induce unacceptably large FCNC processes (SUSY flavor problem) Severe constraints: e.g. Mitsuru Kakizaki

  21. Branching ratios for LFV decays in SUSY SU(5) GUT with right-handed neutrinos Future Future Right-handed tau neutrino mass • By investigating correlations between results of hadronic EDM and LFV searches, we can probe structure in SUSY GUT models Mitsuru Kakizaki

  22. Loopholes • There are uncertainties of estimates ofhadronic EDMs originated from hadronic physics • CP violating parameters may be extremely smallin theory beyond the SM • Various CP violating contributions may be accidentally canceled out Mitsuru Kakizaki

  23. SUSY GUTs with right-handed neutrinos • Three gauge coupling constants are unified at high energy scale in presence of superparticles with masses of order of SUSY GUTs are inspired • Tiny neutrino masses Seesaw mechanism is inspired • SUSY GUTs with right-handed neutrinos are very promising as theory beyond SM Mitsuru Kakizaki

  24. Flavor structure • Quark and lepton superfields: • Superpotential: Quark mixing (CKM) matrix Lepton mixing (MNS) matrix GUT phases (independent of CKM phase Mitsuru Kakizaki

  25. 199Hg EDM • CP violating interaction: T violating nuclear force: Interaction between nuclear and electron: Spin of nuclear EDM of 199Hg atom Mitsuru Kakizaki

  26. Belle(2004) BaBar(2004) SM vs CP asymmetry for [Hisano, Shimizu(2003,2004)] • Consider case when CP violation is originated only from Neutron EDM bound suggestno deviation of CP asymmetry for from SM prediction [From Hisano, Shimizu(2004)] • Sizable deviation should come from [Endo, Mishima, Yamaguchi(2004)] Mitsuru Kakizaki

  27. Chromoelectric dipole moment (CEDM) • CEDM of quark is defined as CP and T violation • EDMs of atoms and neutron are induced by CEDMs of light quarks Mitsuru Kakizaki
