The Facts About Bullying Research has found that: • 15-20 % of all students are victimized by bullies at some point in school • 1 in 7 students is either a bully or a victim • About 10% of students are afraid during the school day • 160,000 children miss school every day in the U.S. for fear of being bullied. (Source: National Education Association) • Bullying will typically stop in less than 10 seconds if there is an intervention • Bullying incidents can be cut in half by implementing a school-wide bullying prevention program.

  3. What is bullying? • Bullying is when a person is exposed repeatedly, and over time, to the negative actions of one or more people. OR • Bullying is when someone hurts, scares, or takes things from someone and they do it over and over again.

  4. What are some bullying behaviors?

  5. Are these bullying behaviors? • Staring or giving mean looks to someone • Telling someone not to be friends with someone else because they aren’t cool • Saying mean things about someone or their family • Saying someone has germs or is dirty • Leaving others out/ignoring on purpose • Tell someone they can’t sit at your table

  6. The answer is… • YES, these are all bullying behaviors if they occur over and over again. • If ONE of these behaviors happens only ONE time, it probably isn’t bullying. Just pay attention to how often the behavior occurs.

  7. Level 1 Bullying • Behaviors which interfere with the learning of others and violates a student’s right to feel safe, to have their possessions be safe, and to be included. • Examples: Teasing, excluding others, taunting, expressing physical superiority, threatening gestures, staring, pushing, shoving, spreading rumors

  8. Consequences for Level 1 Bullying • Verbal reprimand and warning of future consequences • Office referral • Parents will be called. • Loss of recess, silent lunch, separated in class • Counseling

  9. Level 2 Bullying • Behaviors which do not cause physical harm and are not illegal, but do negatively affect an orderly school environment. • Examples:several referrals for teasing, excluding or disturbing someone as well as verbal harassment, intimidation, insulting race, gender, religion, or disability; encouraging others to bully, destruction of property, continual gossip/rumors, or taking possessions.

  10. Consequences for Level 2 Bullying • All of level 1 consequences ,plus: • Loss of other privileges. • Escorted by an adult to class and other places in the building • ISS/OSS • Counseling • Written assignments and/or book reports related to the topic

  11. Level 3 Bullying • Behaviors which are intended to cause physical or mental harm/ and or are illegal. • Examples:repeated referrals, threats, physical cruelty or assault of any kind, harassment, destruction of property, intimidation, threats, obvious or blatant disregard for others, retaliation, or encouraging others to retaliate, public humiliation and/or group rejection or ostracizing.

  12. Consequences of Level 3 Bullying • All of the Level 1 and level 2 consequences, plus: • Suspension from school- on or off campus • Referral to law enforcement • Counseling • KEYS

  13. BYSTANDERS • Bystanders are SO important. • Bystanders are the people to see or hear bullying happening. • We must promise that if we see bullying we will report it immediately and also do what we can to make the bullying stop.

  14. You have RIGHTS! • You have a right to be safe. • You have a right to have your possessions be safe. • You have a right to be included. • You have a right to have a chance to be your best.

  15. We have RULES. • We will not bully others. • We will help those who are bullied. • We will include everyone. • We will report bullying when we see or hear it.

  16. What can you do to keep our school safe from bullies? • Stand up to bullies and tell them to stop. • Step in and help someone who is being bullied. • Tell a teacher, principal, counselor or your parents when you see or hear bullying.

  17. What can the adults do to keep our school safe? • Enforce consistently and with EVERYONE • We must hold them accountable • Don’t let level 1 incidents slide just because “we” think it’s not a big deal. It is a big deal to the student. • Take action…little things can become big things! • Take EVERYTHING seriously NOTE: We will see an increase of reporting and possibly bullying at first, but we should see a decrease in bullying over time.
