Introduction • A sequential transmission differs from a standard manual transmission. • Sequential, by definition, means that the gears change in a sequence. • 1st, neutral, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th • False neutral • This type of transmission is used in motorcycles and race cars • Advantageous to fast gear changes and “thoughtless” shifts

  4. Successfully create a model of a Honda CB-X sequential transmission. Correctly measure and design the gears, counter and main shafts, shift forks, shift drum, rods, bearings, and casing. Use these parts to represent a working assembly and animation. Without a reference manual for direct values, accurate measurements are required. Most of the assembly is comprised of moving parts, requiring many connections. Objective Challenges

  5. Parts • Casing • general model encompassing key dimensions • Shift forks • Utilized extrude, revolve, rib, move/copy, and pattern • Dictate the movement and engagement of respective gears

  7. Shift Drum • Created using revolve, as well as advanced techniques of wrap and sweep cut. • Dictates the movement of the shift forks, guiding them via grooves. • Simulated this as a slot connection • Rotated by the gearshift lever operated by the driver.

  8. Gear and Assembly • Gears required precise measurements • Five gears sit on both the main and counter shafts. • Connections • Different gears required pin and slider connection • Joint axis settings also used

Animations • Rotational view of the assembly • First gear/Fifth Gear • Required gear ratios between every gear, as well as cam connections between the engaged gear and respective gear. • Engaged gear dictates the speed of the shaft • Shift Forks • Animation shows gear change with rotation of shift fork • Simultaneously, the forks are guided by the shift drum.
