  2. Compare: examine the similarities Contrast: examine the differences You can write an essay that compares, contrasts, or does both!

  3. Make sure your compare/contrast essay is clear! Introduction: tells the readers if the essay will: Compare Contrast Do both

  4. Compare, contrast, or do both? “Children are often reflections of their parents, but in not in my case. In personality, my father and I are completely different.” Contrast “Sometimes, children are reflections of their parents. For instance, in terms of our love for baseball, my father and I are completely similar.” Compare

  5. “In some ways but not always, children are reflections of their parents. My father and I share in physical appearance but differ in personality.” • Compare and Contrast

  6. What do you want to Compare/Contrast? Anything you want, but make sure your subjects are similar AND different Telephone VS Cell phone Novels VS Movies Basketball VS Soccer Mother VS Father Write down TWO subjects. Then write how they are similar and/or different.

  7. Thesis: EXAMPLE: Thanksgiving and Christmas are similar holidays because they both use winter foods, emphasize time with family and focus on being grateful. Now write a thesis! Your thesis should state: 1). Your two subjects 2). What your essay will compare AND/OR contrast

  8. Compare/Contrast Review -Essay will compare AND/OR contrast TWO subjects of your choice Your thesis should state: 1). Your two subjects 2). Focus on what you compare AND/OR contrast “In personality, my mother and father are completely different.”

  9. Compare/Contrast Essay • Introduction: begin with well known similarities/differences • Body paragraphs: explore the more interesting and less obvious similarities/differences

  10. Introduction There are many differences between China and the United States. Clearly, the countries are located on opposite sides of the globe and have different styles of government. However, there are many other differences which may not be as well known. What most people don’t realize is that Chinese food and Chinese-American food are surprisingly different.

  11. Body Paragraph 1: Chinese Food -point 1: mainly steamed, white rice -point 2: kung pao chicken is mixed with peanuts and vegetables -point 3: no such thing as a “fortune” cookie

  12. Body Paragraph 2: Chinese-American Food -point 1: both steamed, white rice and fried brown rice with carrots and egg -point 2: kung pao chicken does not include peanuts and is spicier -point 3: “fortune” cookie is a dessert with a piece of paper telling your future

  13. Your Subjects Get into groups of 4 Each person shares their comparisons/contrasts For each person, pick 2-3 that are the most interesting and less known Discuss why you picked these with the group

  17. THE BLOCK METHOD compares/contrasts the features of ONE SUBJECT AND THEN THE OTHER SUBJECT • works best in a shorter essay • THE POINT BY POINT METHOD compares/contrasts the two subjects FEATURE BY FEATURE • works best in longer essays

  18. The Million Dollar Question Do you want to write a short essay or a long essay? You probably want to use the BLOCK method! You can choose either, but you must be consistent.

  19. Outline Compare/Contrast essay Introduction: 1. Briefly introduce your TWO subjects using well known similarities AND OR differences 2. Thesis statement: Focus on an area of your two subjects (“In personality. . .” “In physical appearance. . .”) Body Paragraphs: The Block method-2 paragraphs or the Point by Point method-3 paragraphs (p 120)
