  2. China • Yuan xiao • From the Lantern Festival (Yuan Xiao Festival) • Yuan xiao is a rice dumpling made from rice powder that can be steamed, boiled, or baked. It can have many different fillings, such as bean paste, brown sugar, fruits, and nuts, sesame, etc. The yuanxiao symbolizes reunion, harmony and happiness.

  3. China • Mooncake • From the Mid-Autumn Festival • Mooncakes are round shaped cakes that are often presented to relatives for good luck. They can have lotus seed paste, sweet bean paste, jujube paste, and egg yolk as fillings. They are representative of family reunion. • Fun Fact: The calorie range of mooncakes extends into the thousands.

  4. Japan • O-Tsukimi • From the Harvest Moon Festival • Also known as TsukimiDongo (Rice dumplings), this food is made of rice flour and is thought to bring happiness along with good health. They reflect the moon’s beauty and the gratitude for the autumn harvest.

  5. Japan • Hanami Bento • From the Cherry Blossom Festival • Hanami Bento are dishes of grilled fish, simmered spring vegetables, scattered rice, and other food stuffs which differ with personal preference. They are often arranged to represent the Japanese Cherry Blossom.

  6. KOREA • Songpyeon • Songpyeon is a traditional rice cake with healthy foods like sesame seeds, black beans, mung beans, cinnamon, pine nut, walnut, jujube, and honey. They steam over layer of pine-needles (gives it a nice fragrance and taste). A folded cake resembles half-moon (ref. old Korean history). Half-moon shape= bright future or victory.

  7. KOREA • Hangwa • Hangwa is an artistic food with natural colors and patterns. Made of rice flour, honey, fruit and roots to express colors, flavors, and tastes. Also eaten at special events like weddings and birthdays. Types: Yakgwa (medicinal cookie out of fried rice flour dough ball), Yugwa (fried cookie, “flower of Hangwa”) and Dasik (tea cake enjoyed with tea)
