  2. Working on Fire Programme • Started in 2004 • WoF is a government-funded, multi-partner organisation focused on Integrated Fire Management and veld and wild fire fighting. • Employs 2 500 veld and forest firefighters from disadvantaged rural communities around the country.

  4. Firewise Gardening • Pilot to be launched in gardening centers and nurseries. • 3 month Firewise campaign aims to educate gardeners on how to landscape their gardens according to Firescaping principles in readiness for the fire season in their area.

  9. Firewise Schools learning programme • It was initially implemented in the Sappi farm schools. To reduce the number of unwanted fires on Sappi land, in Mpumalanga. • In 2005 Department of education in the Ehlanzeni Region, Working on Fire and Sappi signed an agreement to implement and grow the programme in schools. • The content of the material was developed by Curriculum Implementers (CI’s) of the Ehlanzeni Region, of the Department of Education.

  10. Firewise Schools learning programme AIM….. • To change behavior through education. Because people are most receptive to positive change during their formative years (Intermediate Phase) • To reduce the number of unwanted veld fires.

Firewise Schools learning programme Implementation….. • Learners’ activity book – made up of activities from all 8 learning areas. • Teachers guide – Learning outcomes and assessment standards are clearly indicated. • Teachers can also design their own activities by using the given information. • All activities are planned for the Educators.
