The Mild Climate of Western Europe Explained

Western Europe's climate is surprisingly mild despite its northern latitude. Countries like Ireland and the UK lie between latitudes 51° and 60° N, which typically suggests a subarctic climate with harsh winters and heavy snowfall. However, the presence of the North Atlantic Drift, part of the Gulf Stream, brings warm ocean currents that moderate temperatures. This results in average winter daytime temperatures around 46°F and pleasant summers at about 70°F, creating a temperate climate more akin to coastal regions than subarctic areas.

  1. Climate: Much of Western Europe is at a fairly northern latitude. For example, Ireland is located between latitudes 51° and 60°N. The United Kingdom lies between 50° and 60°N. Both these countries are at about the same latitude as Canada’s Newfoundland and British Columbia. Based on latitude, these countries should have a subarctic climate, with cold winters and heavy snowfall. Instead, the climate is generally very mild. Ireland’s average daytime temperature in the winter is 46° F. In July, its 70° F. Write two or three clear sentences explaining why the climate of the far west of Europe is so temperate.
