How does ATLAS operate? • ATLAS Collaboration does fundamental physics research • Today, it operates a detector of large industrial scale • Comparable in size to a processing facility (chemical industry) • “Technology push”, order-of-magnitude leaps in desired performance • It organizes itself around scientific goals and (sub) projects which interact in the spirit of Open Science • No legal framework , no specific IP (everything for the good of the Experiment) • Instead, a declaration of “best effort basis” by the participating institutes who sign a MoU • No central (ATLAS) hiring structures; all personnel allocated through the 175 participating institutions

How does CERN operate? • CERN is a fundamental physics research facility • It designs, constructs and operates particle accelerators of large industrial scale (LHC) • Performance dictated by the physics needs (detectors) • It hosts the detectors • A minority-”shareholder” in experiments (~12% in ATLAS) • Offers the legal framework between CERN as Host Lab and the Funding Agencies supporting the experiments • Offers the necessary scientific and technical infrastructure

What is ATLAB? • ATLAB (ATLAS Technology Lab) is a centralized platform or interface to facilitate technology exchange with external (industrial) partners outside the Collaboration, across different ATLAS Upgrades and R&D projects, by obtaining complementary funding, e.g. from the EU • ATLAB offers external partners an integrated test environment for new technology products and ideas • ATLAB has methods to scan the market potential for new concepts and ideas • ATLAB is a technology-market meeting point (show-case) • There is no fee to join ATLAB

ATLAB Operating Guidelines • Based on the operation principles of both ATLAS Collaboration and CERN, the guiding principles of the ATLAB Partnership are as follows • The nature of the scientific and technological exchange is open • ATLAB will not protect any of possible new ideas or products resulting from the contributions made from the ATLAS side • ATLAB will only use the (integrated) results of the exchange for the R&D/upgrade purposes of ATLAS • ATLAB will not sign any non-disclosure agreements • External partners are free to make best use of the results • Possible concerns of confidentiality need to be identified and addressed • ATLAB facilities are access-free, open • Annual Assembly to cross-exchange ideas

IdeaLab Operating Guidelines • The guiding principles of the IdeaLab are as follows • Offer physical space for ATLAB and other projects, initially funded by the EU • Facilitate contacts between researchers, PhD students, MSc students, industry and other potential partners, both for detector R&D and helping to create ideas that are useful outside HEP • Organize workshops, thematic seminars of interest to the R&D projects • Contribute to efforts by CERN to co-manage a dedicated detector R&D program with the EU (“ATTRACT”)

ATLAS Innovation Model(s) • What do we mean by Innovation?? • The process of idea(s) transforming into products or services that are deemed to be useful for end-users (~society) • Basically, there are two main ways innovation happens today in ATLAS: • Through universities who work on detector R&D and prototypes in their labs, possibly interacting with local firms (~SMEs, small supply-orders) and other university departments • Through centralized supply contracts (eg via CERN) for large amount of components, involving several institutes and companies • ATLAB/IdeaLab offres a new way • Bringing together a mixing all the relevant actors • Bringing in the end-user experience (“design thinking approach”)

How? • Can you see ways how ATLAB/IdeaLab can promote your work of your projects further? How?
