Designing a Comprehensive Library Program to Support Nurses in the Magnet Journey Mary Lou GlazerChief, Medical Library, Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Northport, New York 11768 • Introduction • After learning that Nursing Service at the Northport VA Medical Center was about to embark on the Magnet Journey, the Medical Library decided to learn how we could help make this achievement possible. • I designed a comprehensive program for our Nursing Service that involved a variety of tools and resources to ease the way to Magnet Success!! • Objectives • To have the library participate fully in the Magnet Journey by satisfying many of the 14 Forces of Magnetism. • Create opportunities for education and use of Evidence Based Medicine Resources. • Use this as an opportunity to market the library and its resources. • ConclusionsAssisting the Nurses in the Magnet Journey has created a huge opportunity to educate nurses on evidence based medicine and for the library to market its resources and services. Materials and methods 1. New Employee Orientation and Nursing Staff meetings give an overview of our Library Website. 4. Monthly Online Nursing Journal Club. 6. Purchase evidence based medicine resources geared specifically for Nursing ie. Nursing Consult. • Nurses were asked for topic suggestions • Librarian selected a peer reviewed- • Evidenced based article. • NetMeeting was set up along with a coordinated conference call. • Session began with demo on Cochrane Database and demo of how to locate articles like the one used in Pubmed. • Nurses discussed chosen study in detail, even though they were in different buildings. • Participants received CE credit and were very enthusiastic. 5. Individual nursing research training that has continued to grow. Note: Nursing Consult featured in our What’s New Section. 2. Biweekly new nurse orientation session (overview) 3.
