  2. Joseph’s Childhood • Haydn was born March 31, 1732 in Rohrau, Austria. • Born to Mathias Haydn and Anna Maria Koller. • Was recruited at age 8 to sing in choir at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. • He was Nicola Porpora’s assistant in exchange for violin and keyboard lessons.

  4. Growing Up • Joseph lost his voice, and his brother took his position. • He started writing symphonies and was married to Maria Anna Keller on November 26, 1760. • He was named court musician at the palace of the influential Esterhazy. • He supported himself for 30 years in that position.

  6. Last years of his life Joseph spent the last years of his life composing only vocal pieces. He died from old age when he was 77 on May 31, 1801. Haydn composed 104 symphonies in his lifetime. Mozart’s requiem was performed at his funeral.
