  2. Overview • Author of 27 books: East of Eden, The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men • Won Pulitzer Prize for The Grapes of Wrath • Received Nobel Prize in 1962

Early Years • Born in Salinas, California • Grew up in a rural community working on ranches during the summer • Father was a county treasurer and mother was a school teacher • Attended Stanford University, but never earned a degree • His father allowed him to live in a cottage in California after his failed attempts at getting his work published (1928) • Lived in relative poverty

  4. Success • Published his first novel in 1935 (Tortilla Flat)—considered a success • Major Novels and date of publication: • Of Mice and Men (1937) • The Grapes of Wrath (1939) • Cannery Row (1945) • The Pearl (1947) • East of Eden (1952) • The Winter of Our Discontent (1961)
