Early Years • Born in Salinas, California • Grew up in a rural community working on ranches during the summer • Father was a county treasurer and mother was a school teacher • Attended Stanford University, but never earned a degree • His father allowed him to live in a cottage in California after his failed attempts at getting his work published (1928) • Lived in relative poverty
