THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. Greece’s National Anthem. Was written by Dionysios Solomos in May 1823 ( Zakynthos ). Started as a poem and set to music in 1828 by Nikolaos Mantzaros . Officially became our national anthem in 1864

A few words about the National Anthem’s writer DionysiosSolomos was born in 8/4/1798 and died in 9/2/1857. He came from Zakynthos but the last years of his life he moved to Kerkyra (Corfu). He was the first to systematically use ‘‘Dimotiki’’ and opened a path for its use in literature and poetry from other great writers. He studied in Italy and has also written poems in Italian . After he had written the National Anthem, he was officially established to be the national poet of Greece.
A few words about the National Anthem’s composer NikolaosMantzaros was born in 26/10/1795 and died in 12/4/1872. Born in Corfu, he also studied with some great Italian musicians and composers. He also lived in Italy for a while. “Published” his first work when he was 20 years old. Got married when he was 18 years old and had 5 children (2 boys-3 girls).
Feelings the National Anthem arises When Greek people hear the national anthem they feel: National pride especially about what their ancestors achieved . Thankful for their freedom. Both stanzas and melody are very important to Greek people.
Where do we hear the National Anthem? The National Anthem is being heard at: Sports games among national teams of different countries. Some summer camps where children sing it. Some funerals of people of recognized “importance”.
How important is your National Anthem for you? Can you identify yourself with the Anthem? Why? Why not? People generally tend to identify themselves with their national anthem when historical facts are recent and have experienced them. Now that our generation is not experiencing any war or general historical facts, people don’t feel that close to the National Anthem.
Do people know about their National Anthem? Most Greeks today know who their national anthem was written by as well as its composer. They are also aware of its melody and its history, since from an early age, Greek children are taught about it at school, and in most elementary schools they sing it every morning, right after they have finished their prayer.
Should every citizen know the National Anthem? We believe that every citizen should know their National Anthem because it is a part of their identity, what makes them differ from foreign people. It also reminds them of their history which under no circumstances should be forgotten.
Should celebrities know the National Anthem? We believe that every citizen should know their National Anthem and especially celebrities such as singers, actors, soccer players, politicians and every other person that is an idol for many people.
GREEK LANGUAGE. In theclassic, or Hellenic period, the Greek language existed in several major dialects, each of which had its own significance for the history of the language. But the most influential of these was the one spoken in Athens, called Attic.After several years in 1834, the Attic (ancient Greek language) was replaced by a new form of Greek, the Purist, or, as it is called in Greek, Katharevousa. This form of Greek had indeed many similarities with the Attic dialect, however it was much simpler. Finally, in 1976 the Greek language, as it was known then, changed once again into the Greek spoken of today, called Dimotiki.
GREEK LANGUAGE Foreign languages taught at school: Today in all Greek schools ,students are taught English and they have also the opportunity to choose between French or German. In some schools though, private ones mostly, students can also study Italian or Spanish.
LANGUAGE Foreign languages are being taught in schools so that students could: Be able to communicate with other people around the world. Be educated enough under the purpose of finding an appropriate job. Be educated on a cultural level and be able to read and study writers from other countries.
SCRIPTS AND DIALECTS Written scripts of the Greek language cover almost a period of 35 centuries . (from 15 century B.C.) Dialects existed both in ancient and modern Greek language . Their course depends on the geography and the history of the area they come from.
