  2. Lesson Objectives:Place teks here The student will be able to: • Define open sentence • Define a variable for a given (verbal) situation • Write a verbal expression for a given algebraic expression. • Write an algebraic expression for a given verbal expression.

  3. What is a Open sentence? • A mathematical statement with one or more variables.

  4. Write an algebraic expression • Remember example 1 from lesson 1? • If there are 4,000 widgets in a mile, how long is a widget (in inches)? • Write an algebraic expression to represent the highlighted verbal expression. • Define your variable • Choose variables that help you remember what they represent • Be specific! • Look for key words within your verbal expression. • Restate the sentence if it helps! • Write your open sentence • test sentence for truth value

  5. Let’s try one more! There are one hundred eighty-seven days in a school year. • Define your variable • d = the number of days ; s = 1 school year • Look for key words within your verbal expression. • 1school year is 187days • Write your open sentence • s = 187d • test sentence for truth value
