1. HR Induction Briefings ! Is briefing different from training ? Collins Dictionary describes a briefing as “a meeting during which detailed information or instruction are given” . Collins Dictionary defines training as “the process of bringing a person to an agreed standard of proficiency by instruction and training”.
2. DA Induction and Training Provision of induction and training for departmental administrators has been patchy. These shortcomings were recognised in the terms of reference for the Admin Review Project - “determine training and induction needs of departmental administrators”. Initiatives are being undertaken to improve access to induction, training and support materials.
2.1 Difficulties No formal induction and training in some areas Informal training (i.e. help from colleagues) reinforces bad practice as well as good practice Timing of courses – needed shortly after the employee is appointed Administrators have been viewed as a homogeneous group In some departments certain functions are not supported by the Administrator
2.2 Drivers to improve training Recognition that Process Owners (e.g. HR) have responsibility for all users involved in the process Employment legislation, policies and procedures have become more complex - departments increasingly need to have “expert users” of HR systems and procedures Training helps to eliminate errors, saves time, lowers costs and improves customer satisfaction
3. Induction Conclusions Induction courses need to be targeted to people performing specific roles. Individuals tasked with supporting HR roles need to be identified. Formal training needs to occur within a few weeks of the person commencing employment. Other support materials are required (guidance, manuals, etc).
