  2. Scenario 1. Full funding:Still work to be done • Finalize where CARMA contributes to monitoring of reference herds in respect to collection, handling, analysis of samples • Finalize contribution to extensive herd monitoring • Finalize “targeted” communities/co-management boards • Develop CARMA-specific data management system • Develop remote sensing linkages and strategy to best meet CARMA needs • Develop integration and comparative analysis tools • Develop decision support tools • Coordinate CARMA related activities • Develop communication and curriculum products

  3. Scenario 2 – Reduced funding:Maintaining project activities • Reduce # herds considered • Reduce # reference herds • Just do extensive herds • Just do reference herds • Reduce # indicators for extensive herds • Reduce # indicators for reference herds • Reduce # community/co-management partners • Seek more “at home” analysis of samples • Rely more on data management partners • Rely on CBMP for remote sensing products (and thus the data management of r. s. products)

  4. Scenario 3. Greatly reduced funding:Change scope of project • Focus on CARMA value-added activities • Monitoring is responsibility of agencies • CARMA simply coordinates the CARMA “mission” • Coordinate CARMA activities (meetings, website) • Remote sensing products available • Conduct retrospective analysis • Develop and provide protocols • Develop and maintain data management • Develop decision support tools • Facilitate comparative analysis

  5. EX REF “Reference” versus “Extensive” • What are current parasite loads in the Leaf River Herd? • How do parasite loads relate to spring habitat conditions? • Are there regional/circumpolar differences in parasite loads? • What is the functional response between body condition and parasite loads? • Where are there a strongest functional response between parasite loads and body condition and why? • What is the role of parasites in the productivity of circumpolar wild Rangifer populations? • Which populations are most vulnerable to future climate change due to the functional response between parasites and weather and parasites and herd productivity?

  6. Criteria for reference herd selection • Agency “support” • Active research and monitoring program in place or planned • Good retrospective data base • Contributes to heterogeneity • Population increasing/declining • Density high/low • Climate warming/cooling • Predator rich/predator free • Strong co-management/weak co-management • Development heavy/light

  7. Review of Current Reference Herds Active Historical
