  3. Genealogies of Christ • 2 Major Genealogies of Christ found in Matthew and Luke • Neither is 100% accurate as genealogies often time omitted individuals • An accurate complete genealogy can be made by the compilation of many mini genealogies found in the OT

  4. Matthews Genealogy • Matthew placed great emphasis on Jesus as king • Starts with Abraham and moves forward. • Divided into three groups of 14 • Abraham to David • David to Captivity • Captivity to Christ

  5. Luke’s Genealogy • Luke’s Genealogy is drastically different than Matthews, with dozens of contradictions • It is believed that Luke examines the lineage of Mary, tracing her roots back to King David as well. • We will examine this claim in later weeks.

  7. Adam Genesis 2:4-22 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earthand no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four head waters. The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the

  8. entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resinand onyx are also there.) The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adamno suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribsand then closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the ribhe had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

  9. Adam and God? • When did Adam live on earth? • How long was he in the garden for? • Did he have a belly button? • Why did God create man? • If He knew man would sin, than He knew man would go to hell?

  10. Creation of Man • Scripture gives us two reasons for mans creation • 1. To worship God with all creation • 2. To love God as He loves us • Let us not forget that just as God knew man would sin, He also knew the sacrifice that would need to be made.

Romans 5:12-21 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come. But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people .For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Contrasts of a Savior(Warren Wiersbe) • Adam came from earth • Adam was tested in a garden, surrounded by beauty and love • Adam was a thief and cast out of paradise • Jesus is the LORD from heaven • Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, and died on a cruel cross of hatred and ugliness • Jesus turned to a thief and said, “Today you will be with me in paradise.”

  15. Conclusion No one can help being born, but Christ made a way that all men can be saved through the virtue of a second birth. Salvation and reconciliation are for those who experience a second birth, being born again.
