  2. Intro If the Scriptures are the word of God, one would expect it to be accurate! Is. 40:8 8. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. God created the universe and the world, as we know it, and has left proofs for those who doubt! Rom. 1:20 Rom. 1:20 20. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. Archaeology: Prism of Sennacherib Prism of Sennacherib (“Taylor Prism”) • 6-column journal of Sennacherib the king of Assyria (705-681 BC) • II Kings 18-19 & Is. 36-37: Jerusalem besieged • 1830 AD: Sennacherib’s journal found by Colonel Robert Taylor (1790-1852) in Nineveh • On column 3 of his prism it is written: • “Hezekiah himself, like a caged bird I shut up in Jerusalem, his royal city” • Does not record defeat as was custom then • Bible records both defeats & victories Evidences That Strengthen Our Faith Pt. 2

Archaeology: Politarch Inscription PolitarchInscription on the Vardar Gate in Thessalonica • Acts 17:6-8 (ESV, NAS): The “city authorities” • (ASV, KJV, NKJ: “the rulers of the city”). • The word he used was G4173 politarchēs [pol-it-ar'-khace]: a town officer, that is, magistrate: ruler of the city. (Compound word: from polis (city) and arche (ruler)). • It occurs here twice but nowhere else in extant Greek literature. This led earlier critics to claim Luke was in error, a claim that persisted for hundreds of years. • 1867: During the Ottoman Empire (1299-1923), in an effort to expand the city walls of Thessalonica, the city gate and ancient walls were torn down: • An inscription was found on the city gate, known as the Vardar Gate that says, “In the time of the Politarchs…” • It was sent to the British Museum • Since then, archaeologists in Thessalonica have unearthed several inscriptions using this term. • Luke was an accurate, well-informed, eye-witness, and credible historian! Archaeology: Hittites Hittites • Bible mentions the Hittites 47 times • Scholars doubted they ever existed (as of 1800’s) • No historical evidence existed at that time! • 1876: Archibald Sayce (1846-1933) claimed an un-deciphered script might be the evidence of the Hittites • 1906: Clay tablets were discovered in Turkey • Hugo Winckler (1863-1913) uncovered the capital of the Hittite Empire (Hattusa) at Boğazkale, Turkey: • 5 temples • A fortified citadel • Many monumental sculptures • Over 10,000 clay tablets • Whole libraries were found • Complete genealogies of the people of the city • Announced to the world that the Hittites had been found! • It became one of the largest ancient discoveries ever • made! Archaeology: Pilate Inscription The “Pilate Inscription” (“Pilate Stone”) • Mt. 27:2: “…to Pilate the governor” • Centuries-long debate over existence of Pilate • Not mentioned in official records from his time • Was he governor, prefect or procurator? • What is the difference? • Procurator: No authority to sentence anyone to death • Prefect: Authority to sentence to death • 1961: Block of limestone found bearing Pilate’s name • It read, “…Pontius Pilate, Prefect of all Judea” Evidences That Strengthen Our Faith Pt. 2

Archaeology: The Exodus Exodus from Egypt through the Red Sea: • Scholars have thought Moses would have gone north • Dr. Trude Dothan has excavated the North route • Many fortified Egyptian garrisons dotted that route Ex. 13:17 17. Now when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, "The people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt." Conclusion Archaeology and secular history confirm the Bible as the word of God God has preserved evidences of His word It strengthens our faith God’s word does not conflict or contradict secular history or science, but coincides in harmony with them! Conclusion We need to conform our lives to His truth, not conform His word to our lives: • Js. 1:22-25: We must be doers of the word Truth is before us, let us proclaim it: • II Tim. 2:15: We are to handle accurately the word of truth • This is part of being doers of the Word (Js. 1:22-25) Let us strengthen our faith and be the examples of the truth to the dark world around us!
