Cabinet Members Secretary of - Thomas Jefferson State -handle relations with other nations ____________________________________________________________ Secretary of - Alexander Hamilton Treasury - deals with financial matters ____________________________________________________________ Secretary of - Henry Knox War - provide for the nation’s defense ____________________________________________________________ Attorney - Edmund Randolph General -handles the governments legal affairs Now, to create a FEDERAL COURT SYSTEM….

Judiciary Act of 1789 - Congress established a federal court system with 13 district courts and 3 Circuit courts to serve the nation. - State laws would remain but the federal courts would have the power to reverse state decisions ______________________________________ John Jay -the chief justice of the Supreme Court

  5. Benjamin Banneker - free African American who surveyed the land for the new national capital - symbol for racial justice

  6. Financial Problems Washington concentrated on foreign affairs and left economic policies to Hamilton. Hamilton’s - pay off debts to other countries and Plan citizens - everyone agreed to pay off other nations, but didn’t want to pay off citizens because they were afraid it would make speculators rich

  7. The South is Mad!!! - the south felt it was unfair to pay off the debt in equal amounts since the New England states accrued more of the debt -Hamilton agreed to build the nation’s capital in the South
