  2. L/O: Show understanding of the purpose of research for Creative Media. All must (P): Outline research methods and techniques. Most should (M): Describe research methods and techniques with some detail and reference to appropriate illustrative examples. Some could (D): Evaluate research methods and techniques with reference to precise and detailed illustrative examples. • Assignment 1 • Introduction to primary research • Interviewing techniques • Questionnaire design • Surveys • P1 - Outline research methods and Techniques • Work individually and using the class as the sample group, you will research preferences on a chosen form of media (e.g. computer games, websites, television programmes) within the class using interviews and questionnaires. • Assignment 1 includes: • Outline research methods – explain that you are completing a questionnaire and interview – both primary research. • Write a short survey for the class (about 5 questions, 1 long answer the rest short answer) • Conduct survey. • Pick a student in the class who knows a considerable amount about the chosen form of media and prepare 5 interview questions about the topic. • Conduct interviews. • Collate data of handed back questionnaires and write at least three key statements made in the interview. • Acceptable Assessment formats: • Typed notes, essays, bullet points (doc/pdf) • Video recordings • Aural recordings • Images • PowerPoint presentations • Excel tables

L/O: Show understanding of the purpose of market research. • All must (D): Present a range of questions that measure opinions. • Most should (C): Create pie chart diagrams to represent the data visually. • Some could (B): Evaluate findings; saying how they will influence your designs. • Analysing survey results using pie chart diagrams: • Open a new spreadsheet in Excel (Start > All Programs > MS Office 2010) • Type your first question in the A/2 cell • Type your multiple choice answers in the B/1, C1, D1, etc. cells • Enter the number of answers for each question in the B/2, C/2, D/2, etc. cells • Highlight all the rows and columns you used for your data. • Click the Insert tab button. • Choose the Pie Chart option. • The pie chart will be inserted on to your spreadsheet. • Copy and paste the pie charts into an Powerpoint slide’. • Repeat this process for your other questionsand evaluate outcomes. Save as Powerpoint 97-2003 document before attempting to print on Art Design printer.

Assignment 2 Run- through: Ensure that when you are doing your Oscars research that you save the website links you used for your research! Complete the report first, then complete something similar to the table below (remember, this is at a pass standard, more detail for higher levels):

Plan and carry out research into the audience of the website Facebook. Consider both primary and secondary research and which will be the most appropriate. Your assignment 3 file should include: 1. Plan of research 2. Reasons for choice of research methods 3. Carried out research 4. Collated results

All must (P): use appropriate research methods and techniques to carry out research into an existing media product Mostshould (M): Use research methods and techniques competently to carry out reliable research into an existing media product Somecould (D): Use research methods and techniques skilfully to carry out substantial research into an existing media product So what does this mean? • Well, using your understanding of how to research with internet, surveys and interviews, you are going to apply this understanding to assignment 3. • I would expect that in your research about Facebook, that you would use reliable sources (not wikipedia – use it as a starting point and go from there). Quite a lot of websites may be blocked, but that will push you to dig deeper and find more academic sources. If you don’t use any reliable sources, you won’t achieve higher than a pass. • I would also expect to see either a survey (doesn’t have to be just for the class, can be for anyone you think will give you reliable information) or an interview of someone who knows a considerable amount about Facebook.

Plan of research: Create a mind map about all the things you know about Facebook, and then another about things you would like to find out. Next to the things you would like to find out, write ways to discover this. (For example: I want to find out what appeals to teenagers the most about Facebook – could do a survey. OR Percentage of Facebook uses between the ages of 16-20 – internet research)

Reasons for choice of research methods. Explain what research you are going to do and why. (For example: I want to find out some general statistics and basic facts online, but get opinions from young people in my survey) Only needs to be a short summary.

Carried out research Same as Assignment 1, and 2 – without the information trail. • 4. Collated results: The more in depth, the higher the level. Passable would be the data from the primary sources and brief notes with a bibliography.
