  2. About 90 milliontonnes of food is wastedannually in Europe – agriculturalfoodwasteandfishdiscards not included. • About a third of thefoodforhumanconsumption is wastedglobally – around 1.3 billiontonsperyear, accordingto FAO;

Food waste in industrialized countries is as high as in developing countries: • Indevelopingcountries, over %40 of foodlosseshappenafterharvestandduringprocessing; • Inindustrializedcountries, over %40 occurs at retailandconsumerlevel. • Food is wastedthroughoutthewholefoodchain – fromfarmerstoconsumers – andforvariousreasons.

  4. Whatcanyoudoinyourdailylifetolimitfood waste? • Every single person plays an important role in the reduction of food waste. It is easier than you could imagine.

  5. Plan your shopping: Menuplanyourmealsforaweek.Checktheingredientsinyourfridgeandcupboards,thenwriteashoppinglistforjusttheextrasyouneed.Takeyourlistanddon’tshopwhenyou’rehungry—you’llcomebackwithmorethanyouneed.Buyloosefruitsandvegetablesinsteadofpre-packedsoyoucanbuyexactlytheamountyou need.

Check the dates: Ifyouarenotplanningtoeatacertainitemwithashort“useby”date,lookforonewith alonger“useby”dateorjustplantobuyitonthedayyourequire.Beawareonthemeaningofdatelabels:“useby”meansthatthefoodisonlysafeforconsumptionuntiltheindicatedday(e.g.Formeatandfish);“bestbefore”indicatesthedateupuntilwhentheproductretainsitsexpectedquality.Foodproductsarestillsafetoconsumeevenaftertheindicated“bestbefore”day.

  7. Consider your budget: Wastingfoodmeanswastingmoney.

  8. Keep a healthy fridge: Checkthesealsandthetemperatureofyourfridge.Foodneedstobestoredbetween1and5degrees. Celsiusformaximumfreshnessandlongevity.

  9. Store: Foodinaccordancewiththeinstructionsonthepackaging. • Rotate: Whenyoubuynew foodfromthestore,bringalltheolderitemsinyourcupboardsandfridgetothefront. Putthenewfoodatthebacktoreducetheriskoffindingsomethingmouldyinyourfoodstoragecompartments.

Serve small amounts of food: Withtheunderstandingthateverybodycancomebackformoreoncethey’veclearedtheirplate. • Use up your leftovers: Insteadofscrapingleftoversintothebin,theycanbeusedforlunchesthefollowingday,gointothenextday’sdinnerorbefrozenforanotheroccasion.Fruitthatisjustgoingsoftcanbeused tomakesmoothiesorfruitpies.Vegetablesthatarestartingtowiltcanbemadeintosoups.

  11. Freeze: Ifyouonlyeatasmallamountofbread,thenfreezeitwhenyougethomeandtakeoutafewslicesacoupleofhoursbefore youneedthem.Likewise,batchcookedfoodssothatyouhavemealsreadyforthoseeveningswhenyouaretootiredtocook.

  12. Turn it to garden food: Somefoodwasteisunavoidablesowhynotsetupacompostbinforfruitandvegetablepeelings? Inafewmonthsyouwillendup withrich,valuablecompostforyourplants.Ifyouhavecookedfoodwaste,thenakitchencomposterwilldothetrick. Justfeeditwithyourscraps,sprinkleoveralayerof specialmicrobesandleavetoferment.Theresultingproductcan beusedforhouseplantsandinthegarden.
