In ancient Rome, a man who told the story of the Romans, Livy,
the men of Rome decided to take wives from the Sabines, their neighbors.
This is called “the rape [taking] of the Sabine women.” Here is Poussin’s The Rape [Taking] of the Sabine Women.

This little girl was the infanta,which means princess.Her name was Margarita.
Margarita was the daughter of the King of Spain, Philippe IV.
In Spain, people speak Spanish.In Spanish, Meninas means“Maids of Honor.”Here is Velazquez’Las Meninas.

Of interest to parents • (1) Infanta Margarita. She is attended by two ladies-in-waiting, or meninas: doña Isabel de Velasco (2), who is poised to curtsy to the princess, and doña María Agustina Sarmiento de Sotomayor (3), who kneels before Margarita. To the right of the Infanta are two dwarfs: Maribarbola (4) and Nicolas Pertusato (5), who playfully tries to rouse a sleeping mastiff with his foot. Behind them stands doña Marcela de Ulloa (6), the princess's chaperone, talking to an unidentified bodyguard (7). To the rear and at right stands Don José Nieto Velázquez (8)—the queen's chamberlain. Velázquez himself (9) is pictured to the left of the scene.
