Interstate 50th Anniversary History of Interstates System • 1938 Bureau of Public Works • Feasibility Study • The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1938 was the first serious attempt to develop a national roadway system. • Toll-financed system of three east-west and three north-south superhighways. • System could not be self-supporting; advocated a 26,700-mile network instead. History of Interstates System • 1954/1956 Federal Highway Act • President Eisenhower authorized the first funding of the interstate system • Authorized $175 million • Two years later, the expanded 1956 Federal-Aid Highway Act authorized $25 billion The Clay Committee presents its report to President Eisenhower.
