  2. Board of County Commissioner’s Employee Service Awards • Today’s honorees are recognized for outstanding service and dedication.

  3. Office of theMayor

  4. Jan Farris 20 Years • Jan was born in Louisville, KY and moved to Orlando in 1983 to open a hardware store with her husband. • She graduated from Seneca High School and attended Jefferson Community College. • She was hired in 1989 to work in Corrections as a Clerk Typist. • Jan has been promoted to: Clerk Typist II, Executive Secretary and she is now an Executive Assistant in the Mayor’s Office.

Jan Farris – 20 Years • Jan has assisted with several team projects including: Transition Team for the opening of Horizon Mayor’s Readiness Team • She has completed the Supervisory Development training and was a member of the Employee Academy class of 2003. • Jan has been married to Bruce for 30 years and they have two children: Steve, 18; and Rachel, 13. • She attends the First Baptist Church of Central Florida where Jan served on a School Committee and is active in the choir. • But, most importantly, she enjoys spending time with her family. *

  7. Laura L. Shemanski 20 Years • Laura was born in Toledo, OH and moved around while her father was in the Navy. • She moved here in 1979 when her dad retired. Laura graduated from Boone High School. • Laura graduated with honors from Orlando College of Medical Assisting and Valencia Community College and she is currently attending UCF. • Laura was hired by Orange County in 1989 to work in Utilities Customer Service.

  8. Laura Shemanski – 20 Years • Laura has been promoted to Customer Service Account Analyst, Environmental Compliance Inspector with Solid Waste, Permit Analyst in both Building and Zoning and Support Specialist and is now a Project Coordinator with Facilities Management. • She has completed numerous FEMA courses and is one of the ESF-7’s Representatives during an emergency. • Laura has served on the Orange County Social and Camping Committees, the United Way Campaign and the Facilities “Ride United” motorcycle campaign that raised $6,000. • She has two sons: Darren, 23 and Edmund, 16. • In her spare time, Laura enjoys riding her motorcycle, fundraising, traveling and is a member of the Orange County Golf League. *

  9. Venetta O. Valdengo 20 Years • Venetta was born in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to South Florida in 1980. • She graduated from Wilkinsburg High School, St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, (She is a Registered Nurse), Florida International University and UCF. • Prior to joining Orange County, Venetta worked with the US Panama Canal Commission while the locks were undergoing an overhaul. They were empty at the time and Venetta says the locks are “deep.” • Venetta was hired by Risk Management in 1989 as an Environmental Specialist.

  10. Venetta Valdengo – 20 Years • Venetta has held several positions including: Safety and Environmental Supervisor, Assistant to the Director, Manager of Facilities & Parks and Recreation, Deputy Director of Administrative Services, Manager of Animal Services and Deputy Director of Community & Environmental Services. She is currently Deputy Director of Administrative Services and Manager of Facilities Management. • She was recognized with a Distinguished Author Award from International Facility Management Association for her “Best Article” on indoor air quality. • Venetta has two wonderful sons: Dimitri, 26 and Darius, 21. • She volunteers at her church – Northland. • Her hobbies include: Riding her Harley – she rode from Sturgis to San Diego and back – 5,023 miles; weight lifting, kayaking, white water rafting and belly dancing. *

Vicki McGhee Singleton - 20 Years • Vicki was born at Scott AFB in IL while her father was in the Air Force. • She moved around and finally settled in Orlando in 1972. • In 1977, Vicki became a Registered Medical Assistant. • She took a job with the Utilities Water Department in 1989 and worked in Water Production until being promoted and transferring to the Convention Center.

Vicki Singleton – 20 Years • Vicki has assisted with numerous projects and programs, including: United Way Representative Division Representative for the Social Committee Great Oaks Village Christmas Party • Vicki also worked as an emergency responder for the 2004 hurricane recovery. • She has three children: Terry, Matt and Melissa and two grandchildren: Nathan and Zak. • In her spare time, Vicki enjoys line dancing, motorcycle riding and gardening. *

  14. Community & Environmental ServicesParks and Recreation

  15. Daniel A. Green – 20 Years • Dan was born in West Palm Beach, lived in Fort Worth, TX and Clarksburg, WV before finally moving to Orlando. • He graduated from Downey Christian School and Valencia Community College with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture. • Dan was hired in 1989 to work with Parks and Recreation at Jay Blanchard Park. • He also worked at Downey Park to help eradicate exotic plants such as Brazilian Pepper and Camphor Trees.

  16. Daniel Green – 20 Years • He then moved on to Kelly Park to help count gopher tortoises. • Dan has also helped with annual Halloween events at both Downey and Kelly Parks. • His hobbies include: botany and horticulture. He is an active member of the Florida Native Plant Society and he is currently doing personal research on Florida native cacti. • In his spare time, Dan enjoys amateur radio and traveling to the Everglades, Sanibel Island and Sarasota. • He has done volunteer work with his church and exotics removal at the Highlands Hammock State Park. *

  18. Nicole N. Sutton 20 Years • Nicole was born in East Meadow, NY and loved the good life of museums, planetariums, Radio City Music Hall and her grandmother’s house in South Hampton. • She moved to Orlando in 1976 and graduated from Evans High School. • She started working with Orange County in 1989 at Corrections.

  19. Nicole Sutton - 20 Years • Nicole has worked in several areas of Corrections including: MJB Annex, Whitcomb, Horizons, Medical and BRC Intake. She is now at A1 Perimeter. • She has assisted with various committees: Preventing Crime in the Black Community; United Way Campaign; Black History; Public Relations; and Staff Week. • Nicole has two children; Ashley, 21; and Devin, 7. • She also has a granddaughter: Tyra. • Nicole is currently attending college working toward a degree in Criminal Justice. • Her hobbies include: Shopping, sleeping and traveling with family and friends. *

  21. Derek S. Porter 25 Years • Derek was born in Titusville, and moved to Orlando in 1984. • He graduated from Astronaut High School and Eastern Illinois University. • Derek was initially hired by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in 1984 to work as a Corrections Officer. • He was promoted in 1990 to the Pretrial Release Unit as a Release Investigator.

  22. Derek Porter - 25 Years • Derek transferred to the Classifications Department, where he currently holds the title of Classifications Officer. • He served as a Defensive Tactics Instructor at Valencia Community College for 7 years. • He is an active member of the Special Response Team. • Derek has been married to Frenchie for 17 years and they have two daughters: Kianna, and Shaqueena, and one son: Eisley. • His hobbies include: Sports, especially golf, traveling and spending time with his family. • He is looking forward to retirement and devoting more time to the community and his family. *

Ruby Fortson 20 Years • Ruby was born in Baltimore, MD and moved to Orlando in 1987. • She graduated from Florida Southern College. • Ruby was hired by Orange County in 1989 as an Acquisition Agent in Real Estate Management. • She has assisted with numerous projects and programs, including: Wireless Telecommunication Collocation Program, Telecommunication Tower Collocation Task Force and helped to develop the Quality of Work Life Committee.

  25. Ruby Fortson – 20 Years • Ruby has served for three years as an Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor. • She has received an Orange Award and Employee of the Month in 1992. • Ruby has served on the Board Committee for Toastmasters International Communications and Leadership Program. • She has been instrumental in helping with the United Way Campaign for several years. • In 2009, she was transferred to the Housing and Community Development Division to help implement the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. • Ruby has one daughter: Ruperta. • In her spare time, she enjoys mentoring and tutoring at-risk students. She has taught many Junior Achievement classes. *

  27. Robert C. Olin 20 Years • Bob was born in New York City and attended Smithtown High School. He is a graduate of Webster University. • He moved to Central Florida in 1974 and was hired in 1989 as a Building Inspector for the Building Division. • Bob was promoted to Deputy Chief Inspector, Chief Building Inspector, Interim Manager and Building Official. Bob is now Division Manager.

  28. Bob Olin – 20 Years • Bob is licensed and certified as an Inspector in multiple categories: Plans Examiner and Code Administrator/Building Official. • He completed the FEMA “Building Design for Homeland Security” program and the “Hurricane Recovery and Mitigation” program at the National Emergency Training Institute. • Bob received a NACO Award for the “Building It Right” series which aired on Orange TV. • Bob volunteers with the Local Mitigation Strategy Steering Committee, Valencia College’s Construction Technology Advisory Committee and he is a co-founder of the ACE (Architecture-Construction-and Engineering) High School Mentoring Program. • He is married to Gean who works in the Office of the Fire Marshal and he has two sons: Eric and David. • In his spare time, Bob enjoys riding his Harley, golfing, traveling and exploring ancient ruins. *

  30. Susan E. Hayne 25 Years • Susan was born in Las Cruces, NM and moved to Central Florida in 1965. • She graduated from Colonial High School. • Susan was hired in 1984 to work with Utilities in the Warehouse as a Clerk-Typist II. • She has earned the following promotions: Clerk- Typist III; Supply Expeditor and she is currently a Procurement Coordinator.

  31. Susan E. Hayne – 25 Years • Susan received an Outstanding Customer Service Award for her work with the Orange County Bio-filter Odor Removal System Program. • She also received an Outstanding Service Award for her assistance during Hurricanes Erin in 1995 and the 2004 Hurricanes. • Susan has been married to Bert for 25 years, but they’ve been together for 27. • She loves watching Gator Football, playing with her dog Reese, gardening and reading. *
