  2. Our Message Poverty anywhere is a threat to prosperity everywhere (Declaration of Philadelphia, 1944) The principal route out of poverty is work (Juán Somavia, Working out of Poverty, 2003)

Working out of Poverty: a common challenge • Make employment central to economic and social policies. • Make the global economy more inclusive. • Build partnerships and integration. • Organize people in the rural and informal economy. • Promote ownership and participation. • Empower people – economically, socially and politically

  5. Policy challenges • Increase the demand for labour, and raise the productivity and incomes of poor people; • Integrate socially excluded comunities in the labour market, and overcome discrimination; • Improve the terms of trade between developing and industrialized countries.

Community Action for Decent Work • Develop skills for sustainable livelihoods. • Invest in jobs and the community. • Promote micro and small businesses. • Make money work for the poor. • Build local development through cooperatives. • Overcome discimination • Eliminate child labour. • Ensure incomes and basic social security. • Improve safety and health at the workplace.
