  3. BY WHOM? /HOW MANY PEOPLE SPEAK IT? • geographically widespread—Eurasia • most widely spoken --Slavic language • the largest native language--Europe, • 144 million native speakers—Russia–Ukraine--Belarus.

RUSSIAN UNDER THREAT • One hundred and twenty languages in Russia are in jeopardy(15 tongues extinct) Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger (by UNESCO) • the Aleut • the Sami • the Itelmen • the Nivkh • The Chukchi Observers fear that these languages may soon be assimilated in Russian and Tatar.

  6. MEASURES THAT COULD PREVENT ITS EXTINCTION FACT Language is an important part of any society. Future generations may lose a vital part of the culture that is necessary tocompletely understand it. PROBLEM Oral traditions and other inherited knowledge are no longer transmitted among native speakers SOLUTIONS • The internet can be used to raise awareness about the issues of language extinction and language preservation. • Encourage younger generations to speak the language as they grow, so they will then teach their children the language as well.
