  1. Jackson Advisory Committee Meeting April 25, 2013

  2. Community Advisory Committees Invitations have been extended for community advisory committee members in each of our three service areas, Lenawee, Hillsdale and Jackson. The committees will meet bi-annually. Representatives from government, manufacturing, education, banking, law enforcement and business owners were invited. The purpose is for the college to receive input on how we can support the community, business and students. These groups will also provide important voices from the community they serve as the College considers new initiatives.

  4. Student Success Metrics • Most recent benchmark data (fall 2010 cohort) indicated JCC’s fall-to-winter persistence rate fell to the 73rd percentile. • World class benchmark for fall-to-winter persistence (90th percentile) was 78%. • Source: National Community College Benchmarking Project

Student Success Metrics • This metric follows a first-time student cohort for 6 years to determine the percent who either graduate from JCC or transfer to another 2-yr or 4-yr institution. • This metric is part of the MI Governor’s Dashboard.   6. Enrollment & Market Share • Most recent benchmark data (fall 2010) indicated JCC’s high school market share was in the 60th percentile. • World class benchmark for high school market share (90th percentile) was 35%. • Source: National Community College Benchmarking Project

JCC Revenue Distribution • Figure 1 represents JCC’s primary sources of institutional revenue, with Tuition & Fees (59%), State Appropriations (25%), and Property Tax (10%). • Figure 2 represents the average support that 28 Michigan Community College’s receive, with Tuition & Fees (40.8%), State Appropriations (18.9%) and Property Tax (36.5%).

  10. Michigan New Jobs Training Program • In December 2012, JCC was notified by the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA) of $500,000 in training dollars, under the MNJTP program. Designed as an economic development incentive, employers can obtain training for new employees hired for new jobs under MNJTP. • On Feb. 25, 2013, JCC submitted three new MNJTP company contracts to the MCCA and Michigan Treasury, totaling $499,500, and for a combined total of 91 new positions in the region.

Jackson Campuses Top Partners • South Central Michigan Works: partnering with area employers on the College’s Michigan New Jobs Training Program • DDA, City of Jackson & Enterprise Group: partnering on important economic development issues • Michigan Department of Corrections: bringing academic and career advising, as well as credit-bearing instruction to the Robert G. Cotton Facility. • Jackson Area Manufacturers Association (JAMA): partnering on a Lean Associates Degree and alignment to the SME Lean Bronze Certification.

Community Benefits • The Performing Arts at JCC supports several community organizations by waiving theatre rental or sponsoring organizations such as Jackson Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Shakespeare Festival and Center Stage Jackson. This provides year-round cultural enrichment opportunities to the region. It also provides educational opportunities to over 10,000 K-8 children through the year. • The total community benefit that the performing arts department provided to the region last year was more than $100,000.

  28. Time for a Name Change ?

  29. Why? • Nearly 1/4 of the Community College’s in the State of Michigan do not have the word community in their name. • Many high school graduates perceive, “community colleges” as a “lesser” option than four-year schools and universities. • “Community College” is confusing to international students, a market we are pursuing in our strategic plan. • With passage of recent legislation, JCC is now able to offer bachelor’s degrees in culinary arts and energy production.

  30. Community College Baccalaureate Degrees • According to the Community College Baccalaureate Association, 17 states now have community colleges that offer at least one bachelor's degree. In addition, a number of these colleges do not have “community” in their name. • Florida Colleges: 18 community colleges offer a four-year degree. Of those colleges, only 4 have community in their name. • Washington Colleges: 4 community colleges added bachelor’s degrees and 2 do not have community in their name. • Texas Colleges: 3 community colleges in Texas have established bachelor degree programs and none have community in their name.

Re-Positioning JCC in a Broader Global Perspective • New Legislation, House Bill 4148 would enable community college’s to offer bachelor of arts degrees in: • Nursing, Allied Health, Wastewater Treatment Technology , Manufacturing Technology, and Ski Resort Management; • With On-Line Learning and a Global Focus, should a name change be considered?

Results of Community Focus Group a Year ago • Approximately 60 community members, varied in ages, backgrounds and relationships with JCC participated. • Agreed that the goals of the college are changing so name change may be necessary • Needed for “credibility” • Fresh start with new vision • Breaks stigma • Explain the reasons for the proposed change

  33. Biggest Concerns • Losing Jackson out of the name would be hard • Expense • Need confident name
