  5. Who Takes a Writing Test? • All grade 4 students Except • Grade 4 students taking the CAPA • Grade 4 students with a parent/guardian exemption • All grade 7 students Except • Grade 7 students taking the CAPA • Grade 7 students with a parent/guardian exemption STAR Writing

  6. Which Test to Give — CST or CMA? • Students who take the CST for ELA multiple-choice (MC) test take the CST Writing test • Students who take the CMA for ELA MC test take the CMA Writing test • No mixing between CST and CMA • The CST Writing test will NOT be matched to the CMA MC test. • The CMA Writing test will NOT be matched to the CST MC test. What Happens If a Student’s CMA Eligibility Changes Between Administration of Writing and MC Tests? • Administer the most appropriate test for the student. • The writing score will not be matched to the MC score if the student tested in different programs. • Scores will still be reported for ELA even if the writing score is not matched. Read-aloud Writing Prompts New, beginning in 2009: • Reading aloud of the writing prompt and associated passage is an ACCOMMODATION if allowed in a student’s IEP or Section 504 plan • Use of the CST for Writing audio CD is an ACCOMMODATION • CMA for Writing audio CD not available for 2009 • Mark the appropriate circle(s) in Section A3 on the response booklet STAR Writing

Important Dates for March Administration • Last day to order Pre-ID labels is February 24. • Materials are delivered to the district between February 17 and February 24. • Check “Order Status” for tracking details • District delivers materials to test sites 2–6 days prior to test date, between February 23 and February 27. • Test site coordinator delivers materials to examiners on day of testing only. • Test site returns materials to the district the day after the makeup test date, March 5. • District returns materials for scoring on March 9. Important Dates for May Administration • Last day to order Pre-ID labels is April 28. • Materials are delivered to the district between April 21 and April 28. • Check “Order Status” for tracking details • District delivers materials to test sites 2–6 days prior to test date, between April 27 and May 1. • Test site coordinator delivers materials to examiners on day of testing only. • Test site returns materials to the district the day after the makeup test date, May 7. • District returns materials for scoring on May 11. Pre-ID • Still not too late for the May administration! • Last day to provide data for the March administration was approximately February 24, 2009. • Last day to provide data for the May administration will be approximately April 28, 2009. • Provide minimal demographic data • Upload file • Excel spreadsheet (.xls) • Comma-separated (.csv) • Text (.txt) • Enter student data by using data entry screen • “Add Student” STAR Writing

  14. Writing Administration Demographic Pages Minimal demographic data required: 1 – Name, school, etc. 3 – Date of birth 5 – Student name 6 – Gender 7 – Grade 11 – Student ID (if applicable) 12 – SSID 13 – NPS school code (if applicable) 14 – CMA (pos. 218) if needed STAR Writing

  15. Returning Writing Materials • Scorables packaged by grade, BLUE labels • SGID Sheet • Mark grade, number of documents • Do not mark group name • Writing Prompt and Response Booklets only for students who tested • Nonscorables, RED labels • Unused test materials • DFAs STAR Writing

Scoring and Reporting • CST scored on 1–4 rubric • See the CDE Web site for rubrics. • Score is doubled—maximum score is 8. • CMA scored on 1–4 rubric • See the CDE Web site for rubrics. • Score is not doubled—maximum score is 4. • Part of English–language arts score • Reporting Cluster 6 • If unable to match writing test with multiple-choice test: • Student will receive two reports if both tests are taken. • ELA scale score will be adjusted to avoid penalizing student for not having a matching writing test.
