  2. Seven Cities of Gold • A Spanish legend described the Seven Cities of Gold • Cabeza de Vaca even reported that he saw signs of gold in the mountains • This report excited the viceroy or royal governor of New Spain

  3. Fray Marcos de Niza • Fray Marcos was the explorer first sent by the Viceroy of New Spain to find the lost cities of gold • Viceroy- royal governor of New Spain • Because Estevanico knew the land, he was de Niza’s guide, and he dressed like a healer • Some 300 Mexican Indians went to provide protection

Cibola!!!! • Fray Marcos received word that Estevanico had seen a large city • As he went along he saw the advance group fleeing and they said that the people in the Golden city had killed Estevanico • Fray Marcos reported to Mexico City that he had found Cibola or seven wealthy cities in what is now New Mexico. • Another expedition got under way to claim the treasure in those cities

  5. Search for Cibola • To conquer Cibola the Spanish organized a large force • 300 Soldiers • Several religious officials • 1,0000 Mexican Indians • Cattle, sheep, and horses • Fray Marcos served as a guide • Set off in April 1540

  6. Fray Marcos de Niza • Goals • Find the lost cities of gold • Result • Because Estevanico knew the land, he was de Niza’s guide, and he dressed like a healer. He was killed by the Zuni Pueblo • Fray Marcos received word that Estevanico had seen a large city • Fray Marcos reported to Mexico City that he had found Cibola or seven wealthy cities, • The city was actually the adobe houses of the Zuni Pueblo

  7. Coronado • Francisco Vasquez de Coronado commanded this force • He wore gold-plated armor, steel helmet with bright feathers and rode a stallion

Gold……… • When Coronado reached the city that Fray Marcos had described he was met by Zuni Indians • Short battle took place • What Fray Marcos had thought were wealthy cities were villages of the Zuni Pueblo • . They searched the pueblo city and found no gold or silver • Coronado was disgraced and sent Fray Marcos back to Mexico City

Turk • Disappointed Coronado sent groups out to explore and search for treasure • He sent out several groups and his group stayed with the Tiguex Indians • There he met Turk, who told tales of Quivira, another city of gold • Many of the Spaniards doubted this story • Yet Coronado thought it was worth the risk

  10. The Journey • Guided by Turk, Coronado set out in search of Quivira in 1541 • Along the journey they saw their first buffalo and met many Indians • They moved through the Cap rock Escarpment and the Palo Duro Canyon • They finally made it to Quivira near now Wichita, Kansas

  11. Gold…… • At Quivira they saw no gold, they found grass huts and corn • Turk then explained why he lied to them and Coronado had him killed • Coronado returned to Mexico City in 1542 and noted that the buffalo could be a valuable resource to the Spanish • FAILED

Coronado • Goal • to conquer Cibola • Result • Fray Marcos will serve as a guide • When Coronado reached the city that Fray Marcos had described he was met by Zuni Indians • What Fray Marcos had thought were wealthy cities were villages of the Zuni Pueblo. NO GOLD FOUND • He then is told by an Indian guide Turk where the gold is. Turk is wrong and is killed after a pointless search for gold • Coronado returned to Mexico with no gold but reported that the buffalo would make a good resource

  13. Hernando De Soto • Goals • sought Cibola from the east • Results • He had 600 soldiers and landed on the Florida coast in 1539 • spent two years exploring Florida and what is now the southeastern United States • May 1542 he died of fever

Moscoso • Goals • Get back to Mexico City • Results • Because they had yet to find treasure he decided to go back to Mexico City • He went to East Texas and met the Caddo • Starving and desperate they went to the Mississippi River and build small boats to sail back • When he returned he described the Texas land and some black gold that he came across • first explored East Texas

  15. Juan de Onate • Goal • Settle and govern a colony called New Mexico • Result • Led more than 500 colonists • He claimed the Rio Grande river for Spain • They built the first Spanish settlement in New Mexico • He journeyed north in hope of finding the golden city of Quivera
