  1. Luke 21:1-4 (NLT) Page 803(1) While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. (2) Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins. (3) “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. (4) For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.”

  2. John 12:1-8 (NLT) Page 821(1) Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the man he had raised from the dead. (2) A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him. (3) Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance. (4) But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, (5) “That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” (6) Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself. (7) Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. (8) You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

  3. Luke 18:9-14 (NLT) Page 800(9) Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: (10) “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. (11) The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don’t cheat, I don’t sin, and I don’t commit adultery. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! (12) I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ (13) “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ (14) I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Luke 18:18-30 (NLT) Page 800(18) Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” (19) “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good. (20) But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.’” (21) The man replied, “I’ve carefully obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” (22) When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (23) But when the man heard this he became sad, for he was very rich. (24) When Jesus saw this, he said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God! (25) In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!” (26) Those who heard this said, “Then who in the world can be saved?” (27) He replied, “What is impossible for people is possible with God.” (28) Peter said, “We’ve left our homes to follow you.” (29) “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God, (30) will be repaid many times over in this life, and will have eternal life in the world to come.”

  5. 2 Corinthians 9:6-9 (NLT) Page 886(6) Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. (7) You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” (8) And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. (9) As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”
