  5. DEFINITION • A node is any device connected to a computer network. Nodes can be computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), cell phones, or various other network appliances. On an IP network, a node is any device with an IP address. • Any system or device connected to a network is also called a node. For example, if a network connects a file server, five computers, and two printers, there are eight nodes on the network. Each device on the network has a network address, such as a MAC address, which uniquely identifies each device. This helps keep track of where data is being transferred to and from on the network. • A node can also refer to a leaf, which is a folder or file on your hard disk. In physics, a node, or nodal point, is a point of minimum displacement or where multiple waves converge, creating a net amplitude of zero.

  7. DEFINITION • A network segment is a single run or 'span' of physical connectivity between the network interface of two computer devices. This physical layer connectivity could be a piece of copper or fiber-optic cable, an infrared or wi-fi link. A network is built by connecting together multiple network segments using a bridge, switch or router. Think of a network segment as the basic physical building-block that is used to build a complete network. • The term network segment is sometimes used to refer to a portion of the network between two networking devices such as between two switches or two routers. The term network segment is also used to describe a group ofcomputer equipment organized as a network using the same range of addresses.
