  2. Gravina and itsstream The name gravina indicates a karstdepressionformed in the soilthrough the erodingaction of rivers. At the bottom of the gully flows the stream Gravina.

  3. Habitat Rupestre Gravina is full of the tracesleft by the cave populationthat inhabited the area in the high middle ages. During the barbarian invasions of the 5th century the local populationfondshelter in the cavesalong the wall of the gravina( gorge).

  4. The cave Church of San Vito Thischurchissituated in one of the dug-out spacesalong the edge of the Gravina stream. Itsfrescoes, removed for restaurationworks in 1956, today are preserved in Pomarici Santomasi‘sMuseum. The frescoesdepict the Christ Pantocrator (in the apse), figures of Saints and Bishops, and the threeMariesat the tomb.

  5. THE CAVE CHURCH OF SAN MICHELE DELLE GROTTE Thischurchrepresents the mostsignificantexpression of the cave- culture habitat.Itisentirelydug out of the tufa stone. Once itwas the cathedral. Itssquareplanisdivided intofivenavesseparated by 14 pillarsstillbearing some traces of 12th 13th century frescoes.

  6. Underground Gravina Besides the townknown for itshistory and art, thereis an underground Gravina beneath the current inhabited city. There are underground passages, cellars, reservoirs and unexploredroutes. Itis a new and unknown Gravina, a city under the city to discover and really to excite and impress.

  7. Ourwood « Difesa Grande» Itisabout 7 km far from Gravina. Itcovers a surface area of 2000 hectares. Itisone of the most important self- sown naturalwood in the Apulia Region. Ithouses a greatvariety of flora (oak trees, maple trees, Spanish broom, butcher’s broom…) and fauna (birds, reptiles, Foxes…).

  8. The fair Gravina hashosted the fair since 1294, when the CountGiovanni di Montfort, Lord of Gravina asked Charles II of Anjou to grant the town of Gravina of hosting a fair. The kingapproved and proclaimed the «Fiera di San Giorgio» with a royaledict. Obviously, the eventalsooffered an occasion for fun and entertainment, and included variousparades,, tournments, jousts and shows. Nowdays a beautiful parade with more than 200 walk-onswearingmedievalcostumesmarches a cross the wholetown.

  9. National Park «Alta Murgia» Murgia comes the Latin word Murex, sharpstone. Itis a vast area of limestonehills with a rockybutfascinating landscape. The landscapewas a uniform vista of unicultivatedpastureland. Its immense pastureshave traditionallybeenused for raisingsheep. Sheep-farming and Murgia havealwaysbeen synonymous.
